A close call - at both ends of the stick

Yesterday I was enjoying a cool afternoon with a fire and a few cold bheers out by the railroad. I was sitting in the chair in the picture when I heard a crack and noise in the leaves above me. I turned just in time to see a 12 foot long 3 inch branch about to hit the ground next to me. As luck would have it, after impact, the length of the branch fell my way. A scrape and some spilled bheer was the extent of personal injury. The railroad was lucky as well. The business end impacted within inches of a #6 switch… [url=lsc.cvsry.com/Post/CloseCall-02-1200.JPG]

Save that branch for dad so he can beat my hind end with it! Were gonna fix that dead arm yet!

time to do some tree work I woulld guess. Glade your ok and the RR is too.

Sorry to hear about the spilled beer.

Spilled beer is not good, hope there was some backup supplies to make up for it.

What branch? I dont see any branch in the picture. You sure you didnt drink too much beer? LOL

You asked the djinn to provide some more firewood… you didn’t specify HOW. Next time maybe you’ll know better.

I just can’t believe he’d waste good beer… Tsk, Tsk, Tsk…

Beer … a terrible thing to waste

The branch wouldn’t have broken if you hadn’t been swinging on it!

Seriously, glad it settled where it did.

Jon:

Out here in the west, spilling beer is considered to be drug abuse.

I guess if it’s spilled as the result of an assault by a rampant tree, it might be considered an accident and thus free of penalties.

Seriously, most people are unaware of the damage that can be done by a falling branch. I had a friend killed by a falling branch several years ago. Very glad you escaped with little injury and are okay. Same with the RR, but those rails & switches can be replaced. People not so.

Happy RRing,

Jerry

My condolences on the spilled beer, Jon.

I have a hard hat in my garage if you think you need it. Might come in handy next time you take a beer break…

Looks like it was a close call. I bet it got that adrenalin pumpin?

…funny things are going on…Bob goes away, supposedly camping, or feeding the mosquitoes; the chat is attacked by terrorists; Andre’ seems to have a hate on for me; and now Jon has a branch aimed at him, and he looses good bheer…what is going on…?

…see…an indication of foul deeds being done…some of our pictures and avorators are missing…what is this World coming to…we aware…be very aware, of the dangers around.

Be aware…

You call that little twig a branch?

…in 1:22.5 scale, it is rather large…

Your very lucky, in logging they call falling branches like this “widow makers” its not a uncommon death for a logger in days gone by and even to this day, to be hit by these falling branches.

Re the spilled bheer… It was less than 6 ounces, doesn’t that qualify for decriminalization of the offense ???

Re the “twig”… I do realize how lucky I was not to be hit on the head. My original thread title was “8 foot from death” but I didn’t want anyone to get the wrong idea. We have had many deaths in our area from falling trees and branches. One, on a sunny day last summer two teenage girls at a birthday party went into a wooded area of their lot… A branch came down without warning instantly killing one and completely missing the other.

Re tree-work… Nature does my tree work. It can be costly at times, but these trees are huge (60 plus feet) and too far from solid ground for a bucket truck. There are guys who will climb, cut and lower with ropes but the price is out of my league.

Re firewood request… I did say thank you for sparing me, and for providing more firewood. Several pieces were tossed on immediately to appease.

I’d rather accept the risk and live with the beauty and shade tree’s provide than to be risk free in the middle of a field [no offense Andy  ]
