A class build project -- Any interest?

In another thread Shawn brought up the possibility of doing a build-along project with me for a portable farm engine to power his sawmill. He said he kind of likes something along the lines of this one…

So, my questions are: 1. Is anybody else even remotely interested in building along? 2. Would photographs and rough dimensions be good enough, or would you guys want detailed drawings? 3. Would those who ARE seriously interested prefer just a parts list, or would you want me to scrounge up “kits” with most of the major parts? (Some cost involved with this, not sure how much… maybe $20-30, depending on where I get the stuff - not looking to make a profit on it, just break even.) 4. What scale? Or should we just default to 1:22 and say it’s a smaller unit in 1:20 and a bigger one in 1:24? 5. How detailed would you guys prefer to go? Sparse and sturdy for outdoors? Or a zillion rivets and bolts to lay out and drill (and buy)? 6. Whatever else you can think of that I’ve forgotten…

Great concept, Mik.
Not interested in this particular model, but might be interested in future projects.
Parts kits would be a plus.

Mik thats a great idea. Out of the pictures you provided we can sort of vote on what everyone likes.

  1. yes I like the idea and would be very intrested.
  2. photographs and rough dimensions would be good enough for me
  3. I think the kit idea would be good and for the price it seems very reasonable and affordable to me.
  4. 1:22 scale would be good because it can make both sides happy I hope
  5. I think something in between sparse and detailed would be good enough. I personaly like to keep my stuff out year round
  6. I know I can learn a lot about these engines and what it takes to build one from you since you seem to be very knowledgeable about them. If you are doing only one kit I would willing to go with a majority vote on what engine everyone likes best.

Did a quick rundown today to give a better idea of what costs would actually be involved…

1 pvc pipe 1-1/2" x 7" long +/- $2.00 (or about $5.00 from Plastruct for thinner abs)
1 pvc pipe cap 3/4" $1.19
1 pvc pipe 1/2" x 3" +/- 50c
1 Styrene sheet 6" x 12" x .060 $1.75
4 2" pewter wagon wheels $5 (or $11.00 for nicer ones from Ozark)
1 aluminum flywheel $2.50 (or $3.77 for curved spoke one from Ozark)
1 Aluminum crank disc $1.75
1 Aluminum connecting rod $1.25
1 Ozark Whistle $1.33 - optional
1 Ozark safety valve sm 85c
2 Ozark scale wheels 67c (for governor)
1 Ozark loco stack $6.38 - optional
1 Ozark pressure gauge $1.10
1 Ozark water column & trycocks $3.48 - optional
1 Ozark fire door $2.67 (round) or $3.89 (square) -optional
1 box n scale track nails (rivets) $2.49 - optional
5 coffee stirrers (free?)
some various bits of basswood ?
3 small plastic pearls +/- 10c
2 med plastic pearls +/- 10c
1 styrene tube 1/4" x 6"l +/- 50c
1 styrene tube 1/8" x 3" (to make fittings) $ +/- 20c - optional
1 wire core styrene 1/16 x 12" (injector piping) +/- 79c - optional
6 0/4 snaps (for valve handles) +/- $1 - optional
3 0/6 snap (main shut off, governor) +/- 50c

Optional Extras to help complete the scene:
2 wood water barrels $1.40
1 Ozark poker and rake set $1.68
1 Ozark coal scoop $1.34

Rough guesstimate, the bare basic parts would roughly work out to around $25 (plus shipping)

with all the fancy Ozark jewelry it comes to a bit over $40

with the extra scenery stuff about $45…

Too much?
