I spotted this big shay on Google earth. It is located in El Portal, Ca. Sorry for the lousy pic. That was as good as Google could do.
Nice! Looks to be about the same size as #6 at the Cass Scenic…
So all that info on that site is wrong? Says it was the largest 3 truck shay the HHRR owned.
Well, it says it was the largest on the HHRR. I’m sure that’s true.
Hard to believe it’s only half the weight of #6.
Ralph
Hmmm, I just measured the old gal at 37.66 ft, that’s a mite short of the 49 foot OAL WM Shay at Cass.
tac, ig, ken the GFT & The Multi-spectral Imagery Boys.
Largest on the HHVRR sure…But Big Six is the largest to leave the Lima Locomotive Works…and she still wasn;t the biggest ever…the BIGGEST SHAY was WV Pulp & Paper No12 (also based in Cass) started out as a 150 ton model…and then they added a fourth truck to her taking her up to about 205 tons…Her frame got bent in a collision with a Western Maryland locomotive and she was scrapped at the end of lumbering operations…

According to ‘shaylocomotives.com’, 3156 was rated at 197 tons after the fourth truck was added. Also, check out sn 1840, also a large 4 truck. Rated at 150 tons. This website has information on just about every shay ever built.
Yes Ive contributed sime info to shaylocomotives .com and the actual weight of no12 after the conversiion is subject to some debate, the 197 ton figure was derived by adding up the shipping weight of the parts, shop men disagree on the exact total…so I go with the larger number…
Shays 13 and 14 also based at Cass were 150 ton Class D Shays purchased from the C&O, one of which went on to become Western Maryland No5, on the Vindex Branch for which No6 was later built…
Bart, does that mean Cass has in existence a 4-truck shay, even if not in steam?
No the Class D Shays have all gone to scrap…
