A BAGRS based logging locomotive

I have always liked the BAGRS project locomotive and found the various incarnations that people have built inspiring. I have a friend who lives locally that is a also member of a local model engineering society. He has a fantastic workshop and very kindly offered to teach me how to build a simple live steam locomotive from scratch. The BAGRS locomotive suited, but we are hoping to do some mods along the way, including a reverse valve, gas firing, ect. I started of with the wooden frame:

The wheels ‘in place’ are temporary, these are the wheels that I am turning which will be used:

This is the design of oscillating engine that I will use as a reference for the scratch built one

Alec looking good so far. My friend built most of his from scratch as well. I think you are better off doing it that way if you can. Cant wait to see the updates.

Thanks Shawn  Got the wheels finished yesterday… This is the arbor I made to hold the blanks while the flanges were turned:

I agree Hollywood. Thats something I would love to learn someday so I can build a Class A Climax live steamer.

Working in metal is not that hard so long as you have a great tutor to start with, who can give ideas and suggestions. I am using his equipment at the moment, but I hope to get my own mini lathe this month. Been working on the actual steam motor:

The block on the right will be milled into the right shape for the stand.

Next the piston… Alec
