7/8ths Logging equipment

those are great Cliff. . .Thank you to all of you. I think I can come up with a pretty cool rendition without to much trouble.

I just got done making a new boiler and frame that does not have the extended fire box. Both for the 2 and 3 drum versions. It is cylindrical like this one. So it will be perfect for that application.

Perhaps you need to visit Cass, first??? :innocent:

its on my bucket list. The wife and I do want to take a fall vacation to the NE

I think I can see it in Cliff’s pictures but want to ask anyways. Is this basically three different hoisting engines using one boiler? The way the Willamette catalog describes it and the way it looks in the photos is that there are three separate hoisting engines/drum arraignments that then all share a single boiler. If so then this will be a cinch to make. All I basically will have to do is take the new smaller boiler frame and make it one for the back. Chop the boiler off and then use that for the front two.

My 2-cylinder cost about $1K, which is about right for the used ones.

I don’t think I would ever classify Cass, West Virginia as part of the NE - whether that’s New England OR the North East! Be advised there’s not much around. Since you cook though, you MIGHT think about staying in the houses…you WILL rattle around, as they sleep 12 (or more!), but at least they have a full kitchen.

Sorry, gotta do it…That’s my dream logger! I’m thinking the spark plugs are probably like a 3.75" socket or 95.25mm for the Euro guys.

No that’s not the NE for some reason I was thinking it was in the North. Oops

Moving right along. So keeping a step ahead of Mike. . .he is starting the test prints for the Dolbeer logging engine and I have started the third installment in the series. A unloading engine.

Mike already has the frame of a car he has built other stuff off of. So using that as my starting platform and using existing or modified parts from the yarder this is the beginning of my version.

Don’t you love he Easter egg look? Those are all the mesh bodies (existing parts) I have designed already. The upper grey will be a new deck I am making and the lower grey part is the foot print of his existing frame.

I am assuming these unloading engines were used for all sorts of things and like a hoisting engine not specific to logging. But for my purpose I will make log grappling tongs as would have or could have been used at a saw mill for unloading the log cars. Mike I am sure will market it just as an unloading engine for whomever wants to use it for whatever.

This reminds me that I really should get a resin printer. I have a couple projects in mind that my filament printers wont be able to print correctly…

What is that monster that sits over the tracks and empty log cars are slid under to be loaded ? Is that next ?

McGriffit Log Loader.

It has been on my radar for a long time. I had always wanted to build one from scratch but what an undertaking. I had not revisited it since learning CAD

And here I am thinking I need to buy a filament printer so I can print the big pieces. They really are almost different beasts for different purposes. Nothing beats these new high resolution resin printers for detail. But they are limited in sizes and big pieces do tend to warp and it isn’t as strong as filament.

That’s why I have both. I started with the filament but soon found that for detail parts, resin would be a better fit. The two technologies really compliment one another.

Yep, same here.

I think I know someone with a 7.5 super detailed Dash 9 in UP Rio Grande heritage paint that can be had for a measly $16K
after the Shay Sticker shock

So the Dolbeer logging engine is done and ready for production. Mike will be offering the 20.3 version very soon.

That looks awesome, Devon. I like the water barrels, they give it a little more character than the standard water tank.

The water barrels and the skids are Mike’s addition. I like the barrels instead of a tank on this smaller engine. Just feels more right
