611 moves again in steam!!!

YAY!!! and thrice YAY!!!

What a wonderful sight to see! Never ever thought I would, mind. Let’s just remind ourselves that today an anonymous person paid $190,000,000 for a painting that he or she is now going to hide away…and by way of comparison this beautiful work of engineering art was put back on the rails for tens of thousands, if not millions of people to enjoy for many years to come, for pennies…

It is good to see another Steam Loco back in service. They are engineering marvels and may one day be needed to pull trains again, when we run out of oil!

That thing just fits on that turntable…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I’ll get to see her on her first excursion run in Manasass, VA on June 6th along with Ralph and Bruce. And I do believe that Ralph was down there for that.

The Trains magazine web site had N&W 611 on a web cam at North Carolina on Saturday. I watched it for a while.

It was great to see this loco which I believe I saw once before at Roanoke on the web cam there.

That is one beautiful piece of Historic machinery. Very cool and yes it barely fits on that turntable.

It will be great to see it speeding down the track.

That is great. Did the repairs and restoration get done rather quickly?? It was just last summer that I was there and they had just begun work if my memory is correct. They did a very good job and in a timely manner.

Was there corporate sponsorship supporting the rehab??

Doc Tom

I was there.

However, I did miss her “move”. It was unplanned and I had left shortly before.

I know several folks that worked on the 611. She was in pretty good shape when she was parked.

They still have some minor work to finish her up before she returns to Roanoke May 30th.

I’ve been told that all the N&W 611 excursions will be run with no diesel assist.

So, it should be quite the sight to see her run again.

Ralph

Incredible! Thanks for posting Tac. Just fantastic to watch. It held mine and my 3 year old son’s attention the entire time.

REALLY Ralph !? That’s just outstanding, and as it should be. I was so disappointed when I saw the diesel behind NKP 765 wen it pulled into the Burgh. Exciting times.

What a beautiful locomotive! Certainly one of the best-looking locos ever produced. So glad to see her in steam again.

Did we see you in the video?

Was that a female fireperson ?

Beautiful. I love the streamliners.

I wish…

That did look like a woman on the fireman’s side at about the 10:30 mark.

I can’t say enough about how accommodating the fine folks at the North Carolina Transportation Museum were.

They let several different young railfans up in the cab to blow the whistle.

A friend of mine will take the throttle for 30 minutes on the 23rd.

It was a bit pricey, $611. But even at that price, the available slots sold out in minutes.

Ralph

While pricey that will be an exciting 30 minutes.

Pricey?

Actually, word around the campfire is for about a Grand you too can ride in a leased Vista Dome car behind the 611 from Spencer to Roanoke at the end of this month, meals and bus travel back included.

I guess I hang out around the wrong campfires. Official word was the trip back to Roanoke was VIP, invite only.

I didn’t know I could be a VIP for $1000 (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

You can be a lot of things for 1k these days

Ralph, as I said, “word around the campfire”. However, it came down to me that a member of our train club was putting together just such an experience. Gary Poague related this to me last month. All I can say is, if you’re interested use the number/email address I posted to ask Gary to put you in touch with the person who was planning the event to see if it is still going to occur.

Going to scout locations for the return trip on the 30th today.

After researching the line through NC on Google Earth, I’ve determined it will be a difficult chase. Even without all the other chasers.

Picking locations on the “fly” is not going to be a viable option.

I hope I can find three good locations between Spencer & Lynchburg.
