Thanks Dave. I arrived too late to make it in person. I appreciate your posting this.
Very nicely done. I have a much better idea of how these devices work. Should be interesting to see this technology develop.

It is interesting to watch and to participate in - right now I own two different 3D printers and expect to purchase another this year. HP is scheduled to make a product announcement in June that could prove to be quite interesting and other manufacturers have products ready to go on KickStarter.
Great fun!

Dave,
Excellent video. I do have a question though, do you have any experience using STL files from any other software other than Sketchup? I have access to all of the major engineering modeling packages and was wondering how well those printers work with the other software.

Bob - good to hear that you liked the video - I really enjoyed doing the presentation!
I have used STL files that I have downloaded from Thingiverse and other on-line sources - I am not sure how they were created but they have all worked.
Since STL is something of a standard I would hope that such files would work with all printers or is that just wishful thinking??!!??

Dave,
Based on doing some research on Shapways, and another site I can’t remember the name of off hand, I believe the conversions from native 3D file to STL is not always equal. Shapeways clearly states that the do post processing on any file uploaded to their site to assure printability. If you would be interested I could send you a couple of small files from each of the major softwares to see just how they do with, at least your equipment.
I am interested in the technology, but my budget is currently tied into refurbishment of a Sherline mill and lathe. I am hoping that maybe next tax season to be able to make a foray into the world of 3D printing.

the problem i’m having going from Sketch Up to Makerware is scaling. Even though my Sketch up drawing is drawn to scale in inches, when I import it to Sketch UP the object is shrunk to some unknown scale, which is driving me nuts
Any suggestions Dave?

Bob - I would be happy to try prints from your files - I have two printers, one Afinia and one FlashForge (a clone of a dual head makerbot) - send them to my email: [email protected]
thanks

Mark - When I import and STL from SketchUp into Makerware (which I use with the FlashForge printer) it frequently asks me if I want to rescale an item - if I say yes, it puts it on the platform at the proper size - If I say no it is very, very small. Not sure if you are seeing that or not.

ok that’s whats happening I usually click no, ok that makes sense, thanks
