Does anybody know roughly what it costs to take a picture like the one below and turn it into a 3D unpainted figure in 1:24 scale? Roughly? Like $10, $15, $20.00?
I’m talking I turn over the picture to someone and get back a figure.

You might contact Richard Kapuaala at Scale Humans or perhaps a private message on this site as I think he does custom work. Your issue is that you have a 2d picture and there is no “information” to scan for the sides and back so it will have to be created somehow.
I think there’s a whole lot more than a picture involved. I don’t have a printer, but I know some people who have high end ($$$$$) printers. And sitting around drinking coffee with these guys
I’ve picked up on a thing or two.
A figure has to be designed on a computer, or you can scan someone elses figure, or yourself or anybody on a 3D scanner. You might be able to find some already programmed on some of the 3d software sites.
Of course, I could be dead wrong, but just sayin’ what I heard. If you could print from a photo, everyone with a home printer would be making and selling figures.
the cost of printing a prepared file of a figure should cost between 5 and 10$ (depends on the material and the details) plus postage…
the expensive part is to make or scan a printable file.
scanning is taking many (as in up to hundreds)of pics, from a real (3D) object, then feeding them into a program, that produces a printable file.
then work it over by hand or with other programs, to close any gaps in the surfaces.
to convert a pic into a 3D object is (to my knowledge) pure handwork, a lot of handwork. (as in various hours)
if the persons on the pic aren’t your grandfathers, so, that it has not to be exactly them, there might be a cheaper way.
you choose one of thousands of 3D files, that are for free in the internet.
then search someone to print it.

what you are looking for are .stl files the size is secondary, just tell the guy, whom you ask to print to make it at your preferred size.
Thanks men. Mark, I’ve seen his Richard’s work, and there’s another guy that does spectacular work…Andlan Models figures. John and Korm, thanks, I didn’t realize it is as involved of a process as all that. I guess the best I can do 3D printing is hope there are files out there already which come close to what I would like to do. Right now I have simple stuff from American Diiorama, etc., but the choices are limited.

Over here in UK we have a VERY well-known company called Busybodies, who take photographs like yours and make them into hand-made resin figurines. Rob ‘made’ my late grandfather in 7/8th scale in less than three days - it cost me £25 here in UK, so I’m betting that your figures will be roughly 60% of that cost.

Your figures are either British or perhaps even Irish, but are very easy to make. On the other hand, if you came over here and dressed up in suitable clothing, you could get laser-scanned and 3D printed in any scale you like - even up to full-size. I’m sure there are places in North America where you can do this, too.
PS - the loco looks like an LMS ‘Crab’ Mogul, but i might be wrong.
John, as you are looking for a UK person, I’d suggest checking the availability of UK enginemen in 1:19th thru 1:32 scale. For example, Bachmann Europe makes a whole range of “Scenecraft” figures in 1:22.5 and 1:19th.
These first 2 are a bit modern.
These 2 are also available in 1:19th.
While I know you are looking for 1:24th, the 1:22.5 figures are close. Preiser and other suppliers make a whole range. And they could be modified to look like the ones in your photo.
P.S. I did notice a vendor on Etsy offering to convert your 2D photo to a 3D figure. $228+.
I was kind of giggling at 10 / 15 / 20 bucks… I figured it would be a lot more from a commercial enterprise.

I was, I suppose, imaging something like this without knowing it. I knew there had to be something along these lines though. But…obviously…the cost because of the time involved would be prohibitive. It is amazing though.
I’m thinking the way to go know is to find a sculptor, get what I want in clay or whatever, scan the figures, and print to any scale. Maybe.
Or I could just learn to sculpt the little guys myself, but I’m a 2D kind of guy.
A few random thoughts, John…
The folks who are good at digital sculpting are really good; and that saves all the scanning hassle, because you end up with something printable.
I like the price quoted by Tac, surprisingly low.
A related technique is to find a similarly-clothed figure (of any scale), and have that scanned. Even better, a digital version of same. That can save the digital artist a lot of time, and focus on face, pose, and final scaling.
BTW, there’s lots of posable figure libraries out there, and clothing for them of all periods & roles… not free, but affordable. It’s kinda a world of it’s own though, led by the animation industry. Point being, an experienced digital human character artist might have lots of tools to get what you want, without starting from scratch.
