Yep and here’s one more video to go with it.

Something to think about - The Edmund Fitzgerald was 729 feet long. A 1/32 model of her would be just under 23 feet long. A 1/29 one just over 25 feet… Any of you guys with fleets of ore cars REALLY got a yard (and pond) big enough to model a great lakes ore dock?

I don’t

That’s not a problem, the ore dock and the freighter go on a backdrop in the distance with a hill in between behind which the trains diesappear. No problem.

If you wanted to model this wouldnt all you need be a big backdrop of Lake Michigan???

The nerd in me found this…

Dunno, does it look much like Lake Superior? Maybe to all those folks who flunked Geography and think China is a suburb of Detroit?

Sorry Vic, I couldna resist

Ai, ai, ai! Whatever happened to “water is water” OTOH for Vic to get an impression of differences he should go for a swim in both lakes. BRRRR! Admittedly the water is considerably warmer than in the early '70s when I first suggested to someone we go for a swim.

15 years ago today my daughter was born.

The Ojibwe (aka Chippewa) called the lake Gichigami, meaning "big water." Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote the name as "Gitche Gumee" in The Song of Hiawatha.... nobody reads Longfellow anymore...sad

And the 6th verse of Lightfoot’s song helped me (and probably a BUNCH of other kids) get all the names of the lakes in order to pass 9th grade Geography. Rote memorization doesn’t generally make stuff interesting enough to do more than parrot and forget.

Thanks Mik. Now I know where Gitche Gumee comes from!

And also on a Saturday, Nov 10 1979 was the day of the Mississauga derailment

At the time we lived in Oakville, relatively close but we didn’t get evacuated.

Mom always complained how long the song went on. “It’s supposed to, Mom, it’s a sea shanty.”
