3 unit mining electric from HLW Macks

Hey Y’all;

Some progress made on a very, very, slow project. With any luck maybe it might, maybe, could possibly, be finished by end of this summer.
Finally getting around to designing the body for a 3 unit mining electric from HLW Macks. They will supply the drive and chassis wiht scratchbuilt bodies.
Am calling the models 1/24 scale for simplicity of measurement. And it seems close to what the Bachmann 4-6-0 look like. And I think it makes the track proportionally right about 42 inch, 3ft6in, 1066mm, gauge.

Alternative being pondered is to scale the cab for those 4 inch tall action figures, something like 1/18 to 1/16 scale, which makes the track work out about 30 inch gauge, or close enough for me to assume it is that.
Whatver cars this thing pulls are likely going to be scratchbuilt, mostly for the sake of money, and to a certain point, larger scale might be simpler.

Body styling will be rather freelanced but inspired by things seen on http://www.rail.lu/ “The Railways in and around Luxembourg”.
Working up design via combination of SketchUp and pencil on poster paper.
Still to design cab, which is the center unit.
Attached is current state of body design; long way yet to go.

EDIT: haven’t used my Photobucket for ages, had to reset password to get in.
Now, let’s see if this works.

Plan is to run m.u. jumpers between motor blocks so as to share electrical pickup of all 12 wheels: will use plugs from RC car supplies.
Yet to decide to couple or to drawbar the units together. Is for my “Willow Creek Traction” which uses hook and loop couplers left over from putting knuckles on everything else; so, since stock HLW couplers on Macks are loop only, mountings are being fabricated for those leftover Bachmann couplers.

Stay tuned for further developments, but don’t hold your breath until they happen

Looks like an interesting project. I like your idea of using larger scale figures. I use Bachmann figures for most of my locos. they give them a more field or industrial look, due to their size.

Forrest… The Hartland Mack Trucks make wonderful 'bashing parts… I’ve used many different 'bashes over the years…

Have fun… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

The Hartland locos are available on Evilbay, but the best price can be found at Wholsale

What’s he charge for shipping, though?

He ships UPS; the charges don’t seem excessive. Of course, my orders only go from Elmira to Ogdensburg NY (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-money-mouth.gif)
Why does Elmira always remind me of a song … (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

I cannot say what shipping charges would be to your individual locations, but to me in Southeastern, pa. the charges were more reasonable than anything on Evilbay. His current price for a Hartland Mack is $48.00. Try finding that price on Ebay.

In my case, the Macks are already acquired. Got several of them a few years ago when Hartland themselves were offering large discounts on random colors in the Online Club, no longer being used, on their website.
Not sure what to use for pantographs yet, but I’m not that far along anyway. Might simply use a couple from Hartland.

And, yes, the small industrials and "feldbahn’ trains are quite appealing.

Still cursing Microsoft for that last update.
Something happened, and on a lot of web pages, letters are missing pixels, sometimes to the point of being unreadable at some sizes on screen.
Including here on Large Scale Central .
It ain’t the monitor, it is only with certain fonts.
Browser has setting to override font selection for some web pages; some seem not to allow it though.
I’ve done what I can, I am out of ideas.
Guess I could join some help forum somewhere, but, god, another username and password, and my health is a mess and makes the concept uninviting.

Forrest,

If you know which update it is, you have the option to uninstall it. I have done that with several Microsoft updates that have hosed functionallity. Microsoft is great for fixing one thing and simultaneously breaking multiple others.

Also, i turn off automatic update, and choose to download and advise me it’s there. That way I get to research the update a bit and find out if there are issues.

Hi Bob, you know, not that you mention it, I might well look up where to turn off the auto update function.
Later last night, a friend more computer literate than I went looking and found the conflict was only in computers using Vista SP2 and something I’d not heard of. And somewhere in the depths of their multiple websites, Microsoft had a brand-new, update to un-update the faulty up date.
My health is a mess and computer stuff stresse me to the max in about 3 milliseconds. Racheal way off in Ireland found it and gave me the link, much appreciated.

Anyway … back to the model …

The more I look at this, the more I want to go with the 1/18, 1/16, sizes.
A spot of math says 45mm gauge track makes 30in track at 1/17 scale.
For the sake of simplicity, 1/18 figures and 1/16 model scale, is what I would use.
