3 ton mine car

I came across these photos from the restoration of a 3 ton car from a coal mine in Carbondale, Pa. I think this is the style car I’ll use for my mine tramway because the look pretty much dirt simple to build…

As soon as my $6 worth of plastic Lionel wheels arrive I’ll start…

So are you going to have the tram done by the end of the week?

Well, since it’s supposed to RAIN two of those days, I might as well do something…

Building multiples at one time is fairly fast and easy, if a bit boring. I’m in the market for another dozen or so plastic o-gauge wheelsets… if they’re cheap. Since a bunch of these cars will never run, just take up real estate, I can even use ones with busted flanges

Well, the wheels came today!.. enough for 6 cars. So I built 7 ore bodies and a mine flat (used for hauling timbers, rails, etc) – which just means I need to scrounge some more wheels… 8D

I didn’t have proper journals so I made them out of wood with a plastic bushing… Four actually came out very free rolling, the other 2 are a bit stiff. Plans call for the dinky to only push two, so the stiff ones will hold the others from fouling the main (Nice how that worked out…) I need to do the carbody side detail yet before I can paint. The wheels came with some ugly horn and hook things… like overgrown HO couplers. There was enough to do 6 cars, so I used them. They aren’t fancy, but then again, they only cost me about $1.50 each to build

Dear Mik,

Nice little project. Thanks for the pics.

Gauge of prototype in first photos?

Scale/gauge of your models?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

I’m not sure on the prototype’s gauge. Some Pa. mines were 42".

The scale on these is +/- 1:24 on 32mm (O gauge) track… which works out to something like 30" gauge. The cars are 2-5/8" wide, 4-1/2" long, and the boxes are 1" deep.

They look right nice with the reworked Faller dinky…

They look good. How are you making out with track laying?

Hmmm? neat! Glorified dumpsters on wheels. Nice!

Chas

My thought was more along the lines of Army truck beds

Nah still dumpsters…like the ones we use here at work for scrap stainless.
