3.7 Volt Li-on Batteries

So I am looking at some 3.7 volt Li-on batteries. They are longer than typical AA batteries but are similar in shape with button top positive ends and plain bottoms. At first glance, I thought they were a direct fit for AAs. But obviously they are not. So I need single battery holders for these Li-on batteries but don’t see any in my searches. Would anyone know of a source for the battery holders ?

I’m guessing that you have 18650 batteries (the %3 in your link are spaces, didn’t feel like editing).

I went with 4 bats for 14.8v I don’t know if your bats have the PCB protection, but that’s vital with these fireballs. IMHO

I just ordered some 18650s with charger and a couple of different holders from Aliexpress. (It’s the retail arm of Alibaba, the huge Chinese trading co.) I buy lots of stuff from them, usually free shipping which takes 6-8 weeks to arrive.

As John says, without PCBs to manage the charge/discharge, you (we) are asking for trouble. I reckon on charging them in a bucket outside the house in case they explode, and trying not to discharge them totally!

I have two 11.1V packs (3x3.7V) in my Mikado, but they have protection, so I worry less about them. These have the PCB in them for protection:

Thanks Pete. I’m familiar with 14.8, 11.7, and the blue 12 volt battery packs. They all have over discharge and over charging PCB protection. These cylindrical batteries I’m not familiar with, but they do have the PCB for the charge / discharge issue. I’ll look into your links further. Thanks again.

Dan, I’m curious of your application for a single cell. If you would rather not have to deal with the holder, DYI single cells with solder tabs and a protection PCB for single cells, or the same assembled into a “pack” is available from All-Battery.

Have a look at my posting about the LGB Toy-train crane I motorized. At present I have four battery boxes, each holding 3 AAA batteries. I want to substitute the AAA batteries with the 3.7 volt Li-on batteries. These will not require as much real estate and allow me to add a 12 volt Li-on battery to the back end. The 12 volt battery will power the receiver and a small electro-magnet I plan to add to the hook.
