MIK’s Build Challenge 2025

Let the fun begin.

All aspects governing the Challenge are to be applied under

Mik’s build challenge Rule #1

Rule #1: Remember this is a “Fun Build Amongst Friends”

The 2025 challenge is a tribute to LSC’s own Alan Bupp.

A time to overcome the doldrums of January and a long winter

to wait till we can get back to running trains.

The 2025 16th Annual Mik’s Build challenge shall be:

“Rolls on Rails”

Anything that rolls on rails…!

Build what ever you would like that would have Wheels on rails!

This would include all common rolling stock, Box cars, Refers, Gons, Flats… and Etc…. But would also open it up to build the drop center heavy hauler ( with or with out a rubelator ), that old, wagon top vented boxcar, outside braced box car. And even a Dock Crane fits, and a Turntable or Transfer table that runs on rails. And for those that feel really ambitious, Engines both steam and electric fit…or that “Mule” for logging. Here’s your chance to build that little speedster you want or even a “Galloping Goose”.

There is no size restrictions this year.

Any Size, Any Shape, Whatever Rolls .

You will have 30 build days,

and a Max budget of $35.00 [ or your currency equivalent ] ( still trying to keep it cheep and in the spirit of Mik)

The Final Build can be any size or shape that you want, of anything that rolls on rails. You may use anything or materials that you have on hand as of 1 Jan. 2025, without it costing against the $35.00 total.

TIME LINE:

Jan 1 thru Jan 10th, Sign up. You can start planning, drawing (napkins included), gathering up your supplies, but NO CUTTING or BUILDING! Pondering with adult beverages is permitted!

Jan 11th, 0001hr, Actual construction begins.

Jan 11th thru Feb 8th, up-dates to your build log posted.

Feb 9th, 2400hr building ends (extended to local sunrise on the 10th if you must put in an all nighter to finish).

Feb 12th thru 20th, Posting “Glamor” pictures to the “Official Finished “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also post your total “out of pocket” cost, and any other descriptives you would like.

Feb 21st thru 28th, Voting on the “Official Vote “ forum post [ I will start ] for judging. Also Again this year, you may vote by e-mailing me your vote if you would like to keep it secret. [email protected]

Mar 1st, Winners announced.

RESTRICTIONS:

#1 Actual building starts on JAN 11th and Ends on Feb 9th. That gives you 5 weekends to get it done.

#2 For the 2025 challenge, you must start a “NEW PROJECT”. This challenge excludes anything that you may have started previously to the Jan 1, 2025 starting date.

#3 You may use a part of an existing Car or such you already have on hand, that you will modify into your new creation ie: Convert a flat car into a Dereck Crane, or a vented refer… You get the Idea. Please post a before photo of what your starting with.

#4. Re-Painting an old Boxcar doesn’t really fit the challenge. But converting a Gondola to a work caboose does fit.

#5 $35 (US$ or your local equal) is the max you can spend on materials, paints, glue , etc. If you buy a bottle of ink and use two drops, don’t worry about it, if you use the whole bottle, count it. If you have to use 2 inches of a 36 inch piece of brass, because thats the shortest length they sell, figure the cost as 1/18th, you get the picture!

Any and all rail trucks, Wheel sets, and couplers…. Do Not Count against your $35.00 limit!

#6 Any item that you already have in your hands as of 1 Jan 2025, does not count towards the limit. Any “Free” item you can procure, is free. This is on the honor system guys. Refer to rule #1

#7 All contestants MUST post a “Build Log” in the Annual Build Challenge forum section of LSC. You have to declare your intentions of what you will attempt to build in the initial post. Post your napkin (drawings) with your first post. You can change it if you want to, but you must post it. NO phantom builds to pop up on the last day! Progress posts ( preferably with pics ) need to be made often.

Showing and discussing some unique building technique is always a good thing.

Recommended Build Challenge forum Title “Dave’s 2025 challenge log”. Something along those lines so every one will know, and be able to follow along.

#8 If you will be using an 3D printer or a Laser Cutter, or any other CAD type construction assistance for parts and pieces, Please wait till the building start date ( Jan 11th ) before starting to create any cutting or CAD, or printing files that you will be using for your build. If you buy a file to create a part or piece, add that cost to your total build cost.

If you choose to participate in Mik’s Build Challenge 2025,

Post a reply to this thread.

Well drat and blast! I just finished 4 builds this month that would fit this to a tee and am working on a 5th right now. I’ll have to think this out. I do have something I wanted to build later this spring but I’ll have to do a material survey to see if I have enough styrene on hand. It’s a Casey Jones railcar like the Berlyn model.

Well, I have been meaning to salvage those badly mauled Playmobile cars that came my way last summer, but I’ not sure if putting n

ew couplers and wheels on them fits the spirit of te challenge. One or two, though, do require work that might fit the bill…

Humm,
If repainting a car doesn’t count then weathering a car is probably not in the spirit of the challenge either. Nor merely downloading a complete car kit from online sources aka @manimal designs.

I’ll have to think about this. I have the Oley Valley 89’ flat I started and was thinking about scratch building another version or two of. Bummer I just started my caboose project a few weeks ago. Maybe I’ll just keep working on that.

Hy Rail trucks would be fun but yeah not going to happen in 30 days. :joy:

To quote my father-in-law at my wedding…BANZAI!!!

Team Mueller, or Teams Mueller, stands ready to compete!

Well, darn. I should have bought that boxcar I need…
I do have some scrap cars though…
Maybe I could do something with one of my flatbeds…

I, too, will have to ponder this for the remainder of the week.

PERFECT!!! was hoping for something along these lines. I’m in. Need to build an electronics car to accompany my grandsons loco. Won’t be able to install the actual electronics until much farther down the road. But the actual car i can build and I already had the idea of making it a circus themed wagon top box car.

Hmmmm “Rolls on Rails”… I am definitely in and I have a few ideas but will have to really start thinking taking stock and weighing my skill against my ambition.

I think I have an idea, have to check a few things before committing.

Looks like a proper time to finish a project I had gathered parts for over three years ago before I had a stroke. I call it an Egg-Go. It’s an oval-shaped two-axle gondola car to put Easter-themed objects in. My pale purple ACL Eggliner is the motive power that will pull it (them). Think I already have all the parts I need.

Best, David Meashey

P.S. Need to get the napkin drawing together (except I prefer to use a paper plate - napkins rip too easily).

This has been on my mind for a while but doubt I could get it done in 30 days. https://s7d2.scene7.com/is/image/Caterpillar/CM20190722-7e8e0-8bf42?$highres$

Craig you’d be hard pressed getting the front section past the hydraulics finished on that one I think. :innocent: :sunglasses:

As outlandlish as we like?

Any chance of the great California hot tub party re-emerging?

Dave,
When I built my Pettibone Speed Swing, I used a HO scale Custom Finishing Model to upscale. The same model of the Ballast Regulator is about 3x the MIK budget. :joy:

Don’t think that’s happening.

I’ve got a lot on my plate this winter with the new shop, preparing for our son’s wedding that is taking place at our house and traveling 3-4 days a week for work, but I can’t imagine getting through January and most of February without participating in the MIK Challenge. I’ve got a few ideas of some simple projects that I can throw together with some of the scrap wood that I have left over from other builds so I shouldn’t have to mill any lumber and that’s good because I’ve moved most of my woodworking tools to the new shop and I don’t have power in the shop just yet. Been working on Mama’s shop. I’ve got a couple power blocks laying around so I may build a small diesel/gas driven engine for a work or an ore train. Time to round up supplies and get that napkin drawing underway.

Actually, I was thinking of going more in this direction, but I don’t think I’m going to have the time as I am in the process of redoing part of the railroad. I’ve had to take out the tunnel and mountain next to the fence because the dog would stand on it and terrorize the delivery people could maybe jump the fence.

I have two ideas. Need to check if I have what supplies are needed. If health restraints stay low, I’m in!

Well, I move back on to my boat this evening for the next month or two, so no modelling for me.
