2021MIK Feed Truck

Still no word on the status of the pants, but the green base layer is on the model not pants.

And no black paint on pants either!

Gloss coat went on the small tank as well in preparation for decals. Then the fun begins. I think I might weather the tank off the truck frame just so I can have a bit easier access.

Love the Amtrak MOW green needs a bit more lime

What’s really bothering me is that it’s not as dark as the other truck. And it’s the same bottle of premixed green I made from craft paint. I’ll give it a few more layers to see if it darkens up anymore.

I can see that it is all Devon’s fault. So I take back my words earlier, and Devon should come take your mill out of your garage until you are ready for it!

No!!! I take NO blame for this. I have seen pieces of it if I remember correctly. And I feel sorry for his boys. They will have to play at the neighbors because there will be no room for them in the back yard once this mill is done. Craig will have the only 1/4 acre switching puzzle.

Hey, they have this little brown area to dig…

And at the rate my kids enjoy my Protothrottle, they will be switching on the layout just as much as me! An did I can get my workbench clear, I can get the 10 wheeler converted to deadrail before Apr 17th for my oldest 7th birthday.

So, the feed mill is the blue on the right? with the work bench attached to the back side? LOL

Can’t you read the drawing? That big blue thing is the house…

I think square footage wise the boys get more area than I do.

Speaking of the boys, my oldest got in trouble with Dad a few days back after he opened yet another 50 pound bag of “Bridge Topping” rock that I use for ballast. Then he comes into the garage and blames it all on his younger brother. Oh well, now I have the excuse to buy more ballast when the railroad gets extended, right? Or maybe that’s motivation for me to finish off these two feed trucks asap so that I can get back to building a layout.

Isn’t the house a bit out of scale for the railroad??? If only I could afford more land than my city lot allows… One of the drawback of living in the “city” compared to you 5+ acre railroads… Shoot if I had the room I still wouldn’t make the railroad that much bigger just include the huge Woodinville wye.

yes I can read the drawing, just couldn’t pass up the chance to send a little dig your way. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Well you’re a truck driver, I didn’t expect you to be able to read a map…

I mean there’s a reason why Swift trucks end up on railcars.

“Look Ma there goes the DeYoung truck!”

“I wonder if they got the baby chicks in yet, Pa?” says Ma.

“Guess we better drive downtown and say hi to Lowell and the boys” says Pa.

I probably should have gone with a 6’ wide logo instead of a 3’. Just a tad bit small but it works.

That is looking really good, Craig!! The small decal works well on the side !

I’m okay with it but I should have ordered a few larger sizes. I added the same size one on the truck cab to the end of the tank. Adds a bit of “pop” there as well. The Bulkliner decals add just that more additional touch.

So what do feed trucks weather like Pete?

I would guess the tops and the belt areas are kept really clean you don’t want moldy bits and pieces getting into the good product and causing the feed to go bad or transmit illness to the cows/yardbirds/ oinkers. most I have seen have some greasy smutz around the chain drives for spout positioningand the bottom auger, but the rest are fairly clean. They definitely dont look like railcars with 1,000lbs of product on the outside around the hatches. My thought and from what I remember.

Pete, thanks. So in other words truck drivers actually try and keep things somewhat clean?! Are you thinking that I should clean up the hatch area better?

Continuing my quest of making myself into a blundering fool, I took some 20 gauge wire I have stripped from something. It’s probably not anything close to the correct size for hydraulic lines but what the heck.

At least I remembered to run a pair of dummy lines from the control valve area to the underframe where presumably there’s a tank. And I’m trying to logically think out the number of lines running around.

The little “motor” on the end is just part of a triple valve I cut off. This set drives the auger inside the discharge pipe. I realized I need another auger “motor” on the top or bottom of the vertical pipe, and some sort of motor to adjust the angle of attack on the discharge pipe.

Looking good Craig.

Don’t make the same mistakes twice, right?

Decals look better on truck number two.

Labeled one side “Redmond, the other Woodinville”

And I got all the hydro lines plumbed and done.

There’s 2 lines going to a none existent tank, 2 lines going to each of the augers or motors to make everything “move”.

I did notice that using pliers to slide the wires into the #55 holes caused a few marks on the hoses. Next time, I’ll use a tweezer?

Craig,

Words fail me in praising your eye for detail on this project and your meticulous processes. I am enjoying following along!

Eric,

Thanks, but your posts of seeing you interact with your family with the hobby lights me up just as much. I have a hard time giving up my alone time and workbench space for kid projects.

My oldest (7) enjoys watching Dad build and I’ve promised him and his 5 yld brother a plastic car kit each the next time I visit a hobby shop. We are well established in the big box store “pound nails into predrilled holes kits”. Last summer, my desire to build took over and I taught OS how to airbrush using one of these wood kits. Sadly, it got put away unpainted, so maybe this is a good reminder to break it out this weekend and paint it up. I struggle with wanting my kids to learn how to build/use tools vs my desire for quiet modeling time.

So here’s my praise back to you for making it a priority to build together. Who cares if things aren’t perfect, the kids are proud of what they’ve done. Thanks for encouraging me to involve my kids.

I like the stripes on the truck, they are turning out really nice!!!
