2021 Challenge -- Caboose Repair Facility

John, I’m still watching… Looking good!!!

Nearly 11pm MST… you still have an hour to go… or until sunup if you make a night of it…LOL

Dave T.

Sunup? Thank God you didn’t tell me that. I finished with half hour to spare mountain time…now at midnight I turn into I-don’t-know-what.

But really, I never would have started this build without you keeping the Challenge going and without your tin can idea, and I never would have finished without the encouragement and critiques, not to mention the peer pressure, particularly considering this year’s builds.

The skylight:

Thanks everyone.

Fantastic! Your artist’s eye really makes everything look real. A great addition. I really like the rounded roof with multiple levels, the skylight, the posters, the doors, etc. etc. etc.

p.s…The doors WORK! Maynot be much to most of you, but this is the first time I’ve ever managed swinging doors on hinges instead of stationary/display type doors. I’m pleased…

Looks great John and working hardware is a big deal. I much prefer real hardware to simulated. Sometimes its not practical or necessary, but its always a nice touch

The tin can obsession is OVER! Tomorrow is recycle day, and it’s all going OUT, goodbye!!

A definite contender for top prize, despite the fact you cut up 2 good boxcars! LOL!!! Great job John

You have created a great looking and unique building. There are so many elements to like and it all comes together nicely in your diorama.

New and Final Pictures. Thanks to everyone for looking!

As you might remember, I built a caboose repair facility for this year’s Challenge. My intention was to dedicate it to John Caughey, and I’ve finally gotten that accomplished. The first candidate in the repair house is John’s own Challenge caboose. The trip from the desert to the mountains here were not kind (you can see all the parts in the truck beds!), and it needs some serious reconstruction, so it is a fitting first job of course.

I had to bite my tounge when one of the fellas said they asked John for the caboose but John wouldn’t do it; the reason was he’d already promised it to me. I intended to go down there to Arizona after Christmas and after my knees replacements and pick up the caboose personally, but I healed enough to travel just in time for the Covid virus to hit us between the eyes. Then of course John left us behind to our own devices, but with his directive in hand his sister sent me the caboose.

Here is a link to John’s build log for the caboose, and here’s a picture of his final version out there on the tracks of his unique railroad.

I want our LSC bretheren here to know how much I appreciated all the votes I got for this build this year, there were so many votes, especially because they meant a little more to me this year.

Here’s my final pictures.

Thanks again.

What a great way to remember John, John. Thanks for creating this magnificent memorial to him, quite fitting.

Fantastic, John! Thanks for doing that! His awesome caboose looks great in there.

I miss Master Caughey…

I can think of no more fitting tribute to such an honorable participant. I hope you enjoy your tribute to john for years to come John. I’m sure you placed a smile on him with this.

Wonderful way to remember a fallen friend. I sent John a bunch of Delton couplers he wanted for a project just a month or so before he passed. We had a heck of a time getting them shipped to him as his “Chemo Brain” kept screwing up his own address, but eventually we sucuceeded. I have no idea what he had in mind, but it I’m sure it would have been unique, functional, and well detailed. I miss him too.

Awesome work John! Fitting tribute

Echoing all those above, fantastic job and wonderful tribute!

Eric

John,

That is total badass!

John is smiling !

John;

I love it! What a fitting tribute to John Caughey.

Best, David Meashey

Thanks John. Your model is wonderful, and your memorial is perfect.

That is truly cool my friend. John and I had a great friendship both on and off here. He is the reason I am here. He gave me a very hard time about being some gung ho guy who would show up and then get bored never to be seen again. I stayed just to prove him wrong.

I love that his caboose is surviving on and that his repair shop will be put to use getting her back in shape.
