So, here goes. I’m building a caboose and boxcar repair shop with some yard storage attached. I have two strategies this year: (1) I’ll start from the center and finish each section of the building, work my out from there, and as far as I get, that’s how far I get; and (2) I’ve never tried to cut tin, but I know for certain this is the year I finally make good on my annual New Year resolution to wear safety glasses when cutting.
I can’t wait to see what everybody else is planning!

Is what I’m proposing within the spirit of what Dave’s laid out for us?
#4 Cutting up beverage cans to use the pieces as re-formed roofing material is not in the spirit of the “Tin Can” concept.
As you can see from my drawings, the green lines (except the front door on the second drawing) are the cans, and I’m proposing to cut the cans into quarters and halves and use them as roofing. If anyone feels this isn’t what the intent of the Challenge is, please let me know and I’ll switch projects.

Absolutely, John. I think Dave’s intent was not to use beverage cans for corrugated roofing material since so many do that already (no ingenuity in that). Your idea of using the cans, or parts there of, in there original shape meets the spirit of the Challenge. With the overall structure you are building i for one will look the other way. While you more or less are doing what Dave said not too, I agree with Dan that the intent was not to just make corrugated tin roofing. You are doing something outside the box. And I prefer rule #1 as governing all other rules and I bieve Dave will agree. Its a unique build and a unique use of the can. Not a generic roof we have seen 1000 times.
So if my vote counts go for it.

The roof structure, not the walls, yes. I don’t plan on modifying the cans except to cut them to size; the original shapes of the cans will remain, but some of them will show up in the build as 1/4 of the can, others 1/2 of the can, etc.
Anyway this goes, I’ll enjoy it and have fun, and the fellowship is always the best of course. I appreciate the feedback…I just don’t want to get started and then have reasonable objections raised as to what I’m creating.

Well, in that case…
Okay, some of the weekend’s work on the build. There’s two boxcars supporting the sides of the structure and I’m using steel coffee cans, then you can see the circle template I made to be able to more or less accurately cut the cans into fourths for this part of the build (thanks once again to Devon for destroying my self esteem with this game: https://woodgears.ca/eyeball/ ), and then you can see something a little different. I’ve always wanted to make tin collector signs and store them somewhere, so what better place than the storage shed attached to this tin building? They’re mounted on card stock and it bends convincingly and will hang on the wall or lean up against the walls.I spent way too much time on the internet finding old signs, printing them, and mounting them. Yikes.
No idea about how I’ll get the cans to stay in place (can’t hold them in place forever!), but maybe they solder together? I learned how to solder a little bit, so maybe that’s the ticket. We’ll see. So there you go.

I drink Chock Full O’Nuts Coffee. We buy it at work. You can get it at Staples.
I forgot about that program
If you look at the can, it says: “Contains No Nuts”. During Coffee rationing (1 Pound per person per week- Oh My) they would doctor ground coffee by adding ground nuts to stretch it out.
So to me, naming it “Chock Full O’ Nuts” is counter something. or confusing, or something.
