Thanks for undertaking this project. We plan to make something similar (perhaps without the obligatory glue catastrophe) for the M&K Sugar Co. later this year.

Eric

You say you plan on making a working tanker as well?

I would love to see it.

Little bit of information on the tanker car if you guys want to know.

Scale is 1:20.3 Fn2, it runs on 32 meter track mimicking 2ft.

It is intended to be a water tanker.

The intent is for it to be fully operational to house liquids inside although for this competition I don’t believe that feature will be finished.

Scale length is 14.5’ and the wheels would be 20" diameter 2ft prototype for the resin printed sprung archbars I’m getting in the mail.

Another thing I haven’t been able to accomplish is letter it to the FCL&M Co. (Flat Creek Lumber & Mining Co)

All freelance btw.

We have a little service train in the “imagination phase” to serve the cane fields of the fictional M&K Sugar Co. We used Eric Schade’s article in GR for DIY dump cars as a rough guide, visited the local museum for measurements, and came up with functional and, in my opinion, true-to-the-spirit cane car design (link). A little water tanker using the chassis, labeled in the language of the fields (Hawaiian, Chinese, Japanese, English, Korean, and Tagalog) would’ve been a neat touch. I am not sure if there was prototype out here, but it makes sense to us! We rejected the idea for this project for “being too obvious.” Your project will help point out details we might not have otherwise imagined.

Thinks for giving me more incentive to finish this haha.

I can’t wait to see your rendition of a tanker when finished sounds really cool.

I might not be able to fully complete this tanker for the competition as said, but I will be posting more about these fn2 stock that I have been making.

So you be able to see it either way when its done.

Something’s going on with the shipment of parts. I’ll update you guys as I can, in the meantime I laid another 2’ section of fn2 track.

Well i hope they come soon. Your tanker is giving me inspiration.

very nice neat job!

Love it! This is the direction we had been pondering. Thanks for taking the lead!

oh no!! ner do well types have stolen your wheels! that’s looking good.

Oh no, what are you thinking of making?

Sadly that might be a problem I haven’t foreseen starting this.

Ive found out the wheels I had were to small for the trucks I got, so unless I can find 4 24mm wheels I’m pretty much boned for finishing this even remotely.

Thanks so much! I really am excited your interested in my fn2.

I love your videos and your RR inspired a direction I wanted to go with my F scale layout.

I originally thought your stuff was fn2 but I realized its 7/8ths but your craft is still much loved.

Bother the wheels! Put it on a sledge and e-Bay a team of PLAYMOBIL horses! Voila! A fuel delivery system for the yet to be built Arctic branch of your RR!

A better way to do the Whiskey Cask car if doing it out of charred oak doesn’t work. I can simulate the wooden cask and put the whiskey and pieces of charred oak in the tank.

It can get pretty chilly here like the arctic! Lol

In my headcannon of this freelance it does start in the winter. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

That is a neat little tank car.

I built a tank to drop fluid on my track cleaning car and I found a little brass valve at Home Depot that worked nicely.

Thats a good idea.

I’ll see what I can do, thats where I’m headed tomorrow.

So I finally started staining the tanker car.

I used an old method that people say works, Put steel wool in jar with just vinegar and let it sit for like a week.

It stains the wood apparently

I also constructed ladders from scratch and attached them.

I was able to purchase some exact 1:20. 3 ¾ MCB Replicas like how they use on the SR&RL, WW&FR. Not to mention they have actuall prototypical function.

Also was able to add them to my boxcar, I have about 3 more pairs.

Never thought about rusting steel wool to produce an authentic rust wash. Great idea.

Been using the Rust Solution as described for a long time. I think I leaned it from Kevin Strong, but the method is not new. I like it a lot as a wood stain - I used it on the trestle bents for Brunt Coal last spring.
