2018 was good (or not?)

how was this last year?

for me personaly, even if i was not able to model or run trains - no tombstone with my name and 2018 on it.

my wife and kids are alive and healthy.

i could pay all my bills and help some people - and still have a little more, than a year ago.

so, (for me) 2018 was good.

and for you?

Korm, I have to agree with you. Things weren’t perfect for me, but they were better then they were a few a years ago. And any day above ground is a good day.

I could complain about numerous things but compared to the suffering of all those from fires, natural disasters, wars, famine and senseless random shootings none of them are even worth mentioning. Here’s hoping for a better, kinder world in 2019.

2018 was an up and down year for me. It started great as we were able to go to the Nascar races in Daytona and Talladega. Then in May we went out to Arizona for the grandson’s high school graduation. While there, we were to look around to see where we would like to live once the wife retires. But, we found a property we both liked and ended up buying it. So, as of July 1st we own two houses with two mortgage payments. So, it was get home and hurry up to declutter the Florida property and get it on the market. Well, I got the house ready and took a 25 foot Uhaul truck full of mostly toys, collectibles and trains to the Az house. Then is was back to Florida to work on the 24x30 shop building. Tear down the G railroad inside and start boxing more train stuff. At Thanksgiving, the wife and I drove the Corvette out and left it at the Az house. At Christmas we drove up to Augusta Ga for Christmas with our daughter and her husband. On the way back home, I start having an episode with gout in my ankle. So, after trying to get it under control with my Indomethacin tablets, I finally went to the ER on New Years night and got a shot of steroids and a script for more in pill form. OH, and the house is still not sold. But, 2019 is starting out better at least as my gout is in remission.

The plan for 2019 is to sell the Florida property, remodel the master bathroom, replace the kitchen and if there is any money left over, build a shop for the trains and Corvette. Then after that, build the railroad. That all sounds good until I think about the fact I’m 66 years old and my body feels 66.

But, I’m thankful to be alive. The kids and grand kids are all doing fine.

I thought 2018 was pretty good, except for all the rain we got. Haven’t gotten much done on the yard extension because of the weather, but it should be usable in time for the Ops session in April. And I think 2018’s Ops session was the best one so far. Flew out to Oregon in June to visit with my youngest son and his family, and also had to chance to meet Ric Marty and his wonderful wife, Pat, not to mention operating on his Shasta Pacific. Great time! Then took a trip with Ric out to see the Port Orford RR out on the coast. Had lunch with Richard and his wife. Then shared war stories with Ric on the way back.

Had my youngest and his family fly east in August where they got a chance to experience a rainstorm…and videoed it to boot.

Oldest boy got engaged to a wonderful woman at Christmas and they’re in the process of buying a house not far away.

All in all, can’t complain.

Hey you can do it, Randy. I have been on chemotherapy all year. In the summer we had to take out two 75’ pine trees right adjacent to my mainline. Had to tear up about 40% of the mainline, and the tree folks wiped out a lot of the track support especially the grade up to a bridge. It was VERY slow going trying to rebuild it. In fact in September I was about ready to pack it in and sell the trains. My wife wouldn’t let me though, and finally in December I got it back running. Still a lot of work to do with the scenery etc., but at least I have trains running now - and I’m 82, so a youngster like you, Randy, should be able to make it. Of course at 82, the thought of just moving is horrifying to me!!!

I have a lot I could complain about. But in the midst of struggle I have found rich blessings.

Bad, although I did a few interesting models and picked up several new items, I still have no layout to run anything on.

The Pizza and indoor harbor layouts are blockaded by a wall of belongings, and the planned outdoor layout keeps hitting by one delay after another. At least this year I got the dead tree out of the way, but I still have to clear out a patch of bamboo and some dead tree roots, pull up some pavers, re-level everything and replace the pavers and install a new low retaining wall. All while my neighbors little terror yap-yap dogs bark at me constantly, eventually they get bored and go away, until the next large noise is made. I’m farther along than I was last January but I wish I could get something, anything… even temporary New Bright track down, would be a win.

2018 for me personally was a good year. Oh sure there’s always something that will try to bring you down. But my outlook is to try and remain positive. The biggest accomplishment for me is that our garden railroad has actually become something quite nice. Didn’t travel anywhere this summer and just stayed home and worked every day to get it built. For most of the time I enjoy my job and the kids I teach…there’s always a few knuckle heads that I hope will “get it” soon. Only real downfall is my wife’s physical health. Dealing with a few discs below her neck that have been causing severe pain to shoot down her arm and wrist. Waiting for a second opinion with the hopes that 2019 will see some real relief.

I do wish everyone on this site a wonderful New Year!!

Richard

HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!

2018 was a very good year for me I got a left hip replacement, nice to walk again without pain. Only downside is no more Mountain Biking after 29 years, made up for it by hiking the same trails I used to ride. Looking forward to another great and positive 72nd year.
