Large Scale Central

2016 Roundy Round Runners Report

Greetings Fellow Tail Chasers.

After a big bowl of Cheerios for breakfast I have managed to pull or spray all weeds on the layout. Debris removal is also complete. Winter was kind to the Cibola with very little damage. This week I hope to sweep in a little ballast to level and stabilize the main line. It is nice to have all of the track work from last year over and done with. The only track laying I will have to endure for this summer will be the branchline…if I get that motivated. My major goal for the season will be the completion of battery / RC swap and paint / lettering on engines 37 and 51. That will leave the kit-bash and construction of the four truck shay as the only unfinished engine.

Now nobody have a heart-attack but I broke down and bought a Airwire T5000 controller. I am not getting rid of my T9000s just wanted to see what all of the fuss was about. Plus it makes programming the G3 boards a breeze.

New buildings, new people and the installation of the last two bridges on the mainline will keep me busy all summer long. Pictures coming here soon. Nut and bolt details on my website for those that want the gorey details.

Hot BBQ ribs in the smoker, cold beer in the fridge, comfy lawn chair in position…Checklist complete. I am ready to watch trains go in a circle.

There is no gunfire in model railroading…if I am elected President my first act of diplomacy will be to send the head of every foreign country a train set.

Ronald Regan conducted a lot of California State business with the opposition over his 0 Gauge 3 rail layout in the basement of the Guvnor’s Mansion in Sacramento. Its hard to yell at each other when you are playing with trains… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Glad you got so much done, Boomer. A visit from my grandson motivated me to repair the mainline damaged by an 80 ft Pine tree that fell on it last fall. Now my project is to pull up that section and install the modification planned, but was waiting for decent weather (now). Several Alberta Spruce gave up the ghost over the winter and need to be replaced, fortunately, I have their replacements waiting in the nursery. One of my layout benches needs to be leveled, but the ground needs to dry out a bit, first. I can run trains as it si, so all is good.

Boomer all hale Boomer!

Great to have you back!

My 2 loops survived the winter with no track mishaps!

I did have a large limb come down and damaged the power feed to my small pond … I will get to it …

Most if the ballasting is complete and I have run some trains … (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

My biggest issue is TIME … I steal time before the wife comes home to small stuff on the railroad.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Hello Boomer, Glad to see you busy on your layout. Mine went through the winter just fine, until 3 weeks ago When a big Hemlock fell in the middle of it. But a week later tree all cut up and gone. some track replaced and its like new again.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Wow a 4 truck Shay Boomer! Can’t wait to see that one.

Not much damage on my RR from this past Winter but the cold persists and it is not much fun to be kneeling on the ground for extended periods refilling ballast etc… when it is under 50 degrees.

Trains have been running and the switch machines went back on at the main yard this past Sunday but the turntable and engine house will wait for another week or 2. The new skid shacks and Irish tin barn will be heading out soon. The old mine building is getting new roof panels. The hardboard has swelled and rotted out after 6 years but the plywood sides are still strong.

Happy RRing

Boomer; good to hear of all the work been done; looking forward to the photos. I expierenced no winter damage as my layout is indoors; so I get to enjoy running all year & it is 4 feet off the floor so I can enjoy not having to bend down! I installed 1 curved switch this past winter plus reguar maintenance of all my stock; I also have 3 rail & HO to entertain myself. Retired life is great; I recommend it to all!

Boomer- Glad to hear that you’re up and running. I’m heading back in to the trenches to finish what I started last season. Then, I too will (hopefully) be watching trains go around in circles. I think there’s a song in there somewhere…

Get down, get funky, and get back up again.

Kevin,

You really should learn to embed YouTube videos. There is a “How to” in the Testing Forum

Actually the secret to this is that you can yell all you want but no one can hear you over the cacophonyof noise those 3-railers generate (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Boomer, It’s still cold in the North-West corner of the Land Of Enchantment, 27 this morning. Ran a couple of trains 3 weeks ago thou.

The Irrigation Ditch that feeds my river came on last week, and I opened up the headgates to my river and had a “Spring Flood” to cleanse all the acclimated junk out of the river bed. Was scooping out the big stuff, to keep it out of the drain lines, and went to reach a leaf clump, and noticed a Black Widow riding piggy back. That was a close one… Grabbed a stick, and beat the F@#K out of it. Shinny black spiders and I don’t get along.

Track work survived well this winter.

Spiders (black widows & brown recluse) are the reason God made big heavy sticks…we can thank rattle-snakes for the creation of shotguns.

Ahh the many pleasures of garden railroading in the southwest. Not only does the land fight back, but it is often poisonous.
