2 vs 3 truck Shay

So I already have a 2nd run 2 truck Shay and put the metal trucks on it. I’m considering one of the 3 trucks BUT is that greedy. For those with both, how do they compare?

Help convince me to bit the bullet and get over the guilt.

Greedy? why is buying another locomotive being greedy? I have somewhere around 35 locomotives.

I havent bought a 3 truck Shay because I am not fond of the 3 truck versions. But, since they are at almost give away prices (compaired to what they cost when the first came out) I am tempted.

I say go for it!

I just bought a used two truck shay off an auction, it will be fun tinkering with it. I suppose there will be upgrades I must do.

Doug Arnold made me do it!

You guys are no help. It’s like having a crack addition and y’all giving me your dealers cell phone number. I mean really, shouldn’t yall be saying something like, there are deprived adults all over the world and I should leave some for them. Or reminding me I’ll have to lie to my wife saying I’ve had it for years when she sees it.

I just checked Evil Bay and Al Kramer is selling 3-Truck Shays for $319.50. That’s a steal of a deal. I wish I could justify one at that price.

BTW I’ve bought lots of stuff from this seller and he is great to deal with, just in case there is some of you out there do not know of this sell or a little leary of E-Bay.

Yes Randy Anna Kramer has them for $319- $340 depending on the roadname I think and with sound for $420 plus shipping.

I have been considering getting one too but now I’m really kicking myself because at one time Anna was selling the sound version one for $370 !!!

The one thing that bothers me about the 3 truck is the size of it. It is HUGE! Does the tender come off easily for transport? If it doesn’t you are going to need a cradle to carry it.

Trains are like a drug Mickey, it is so satisfying to score a sweet deal on a special one. Let us know when you pull the trigger!

Yeh Todd that 3 truck is huge and one would want some sort of carrier or cradle to launch it on the tracks. Maybe some others that have this beast could let us know what they have done.

Well its no fun having this disease unless we infect others. The more the merrier.

Oh gee, for that price I will have to consider it. But I would have to bash it into a 2 truck jobbie. A three truck one would just be too much for my little railroad.

If you share with others, it’s not greedy, it’s being thoughtful. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-money-mouth.gif)

Al Kramer has always offered the best deals. I used to look forward to visiting his train shop near the van nuys airport.

Todd, the man’s name is Al Kramer. You are confusing the email address he is using with his name. His wife’s name could be Abigail or something and they use a 'n a in their email address.

I thought ANA Kramer was his name, and the ANA were intitials for his first, middle and second middle name. LOL On a more serious note, I have dealt with Mr. Kramer, on Evilbay, and have had nothing but excellent results with my purchases from him. He also takes questions about his items and questions in general, about large scale, gracefully.

Getting back to the original question, how do the two versions of the Bachmann shay compare? I don’t own one and am not planning to, but would like to know about them.

I own a two truck Shay with the upgraded metal trucks. It’s a great loco. It is big. I have a small railroad (about 200 feet of track) and I use the Shay for 6 to 8 car trains. I think it looks OK. I think a three truck Shay would look too big. I visited one of our members (Dan DeVoto) in Pleasanton, CA this past summer and he had both the 2 and 3 truck Shays running on his railroad. Both looked good on his pike.

I have both a two and a three truck - I have no had trouble with either one, I do follow the lubrication instuctions, they are large !

Mickey,

I have both 2 and 3 truck Shays. I have to thank Joe for the “advertisement” above. Both will pull my 11 loaded log cars up Cocos cut which is a 4%+ grade with no problem. The logs are real, cut from my Redwood tree branches. They should be run slow which is prototipical. There are stories about the engineers, on the West Side logging RR, running along side their loco to place track damage markers. They would then jump back on, Shays rarely go over 12 mph. Here’s a video link to my 3 truck Shay. You can’t go wrong getting 2 or 3 trucks.
