Large Scale Central

2-6-0 Indy Redo

I’ve had a Bachmann Indy 2-6-0 sitting around for awhile. Modeling in 1:20 it was just too small so I bought a banta cab kit and started working on it. While working, I got the idea to make it a 0-6-0. Here’s my work so far… Here’s the start of the front end. the pilot and cow catcher removed and new beam put in with kadee coupler.

here’s the finished product. The wood is cedar, the hardware is stolen from the frontend of the original. The tool box is from the tender.

Here’s the Banta cab being built. It’s almost done. The banta kits are really nice and easy to build. The only complaint I have is the instructions are a bit vague, for me at least. But, I’m usually half in the bag when working on models…

I’m also gonna do some work to the tender. I wasn’t a fan of the banta tender conversion so I’m starting my own. More to follow. Terrry

nice work. i like it

Looking good so far  Love the cab.

Some more work. I added a little more to the front end

I think it’s a believeable 0-6-0. I like the way the “natural” wood turned out as well. The inside of the cab will be green and the whole thing weathered. Next comes the tender. I’ve done a little work but neglected any photos so far. Terry

Nice! I like that cab.

I’ve done the same thing to an Indy several years ago, Im 700 miles from home this week, but I can find you pictures of what I did when I get home next weekend…Heres a smallish image of her

Nice lookin loco Bart! A Little more work tonight between football games… First here’s a stack comparison. I don’t have a 10 wheeler stack and to be honest I really don’t want to carve up the front end to make one fit. Here’s a diamond stack that I have

Here’s the start of the new coal bunker for the tender. It’s a simple cedar box fitted to the tender and sprayed black

More to come Terry

Nice!

I like the look of your wood weathering technique. You say in the first pic “sprayed black”. Are you using something like steel wool to remove some of the paint ? Whatever it is it works perfect.

Jon, I started with untreated cedar, glued it together with ACC (super) glue and sprayed it with a can of $0.99 flat black paint. I then use a “soft” small (1" long 1/2" wide) detail wire brush and scrub off paint. If i take too much off I just spray more on and start over. The brush is coarse enough that it won’t get into the cracks but it doesn’t score the wood.

Terry

Looks good Terry

Thanks Terry. Looks great.

That’s sharp!!!

Got some more work done. I’ve been busy with side projects lately so the 0-6-0 has been on the back burner. Here’s a front look. I had some pole pockets I added on:

Ropes for the bell and whistle. I took off the old cheap plastic whistle and modified and added one a friend gave me.

This will be the coupler and rear end for the tender. It’s sitting on the vice at the moment.

I think it’s ready for the lettering shop some details & detailing & some crew. Terry

After looking over the thread I have to change that number plate too!

Looks good. Now you got me thinking about adding a larger cab to my indy.

There are some Baldwin number plate tie tacks (or pins) out there. FEBT sold them for a while with the EBT engine numbers. The size isn't too bad for F scale (smaller than the stock one on Indy).

Me too. I'm also thinking that my Indy hasn't turned a wheel since a few days after I got it. Need to change that.

I think I have some ozark number plates on hand. This one may end up loco #6.

Long has it been since I have worked on this project. But, I pulled it out the other day and finished it up. I made a few changes to it. Since it is to be a switcher I added step boards on the front and rear and I also changed it from #6 to #2 (I didn’t have #6 graphics). The big thing and main reason I waited was to acquire the R/C parts for it. I added an airwire card with a 2600 mah LiIon battery and phoenix sound. Aside from weathering and a crew I think it’s done.

I am surprised at how well, for it’s size, this little loco pulls. It can push/pull 7 of my Bachmann 2 bay ore cars around on flat ground. It may do more but that’s all I had out. & is plenty though. The only thing that is kind of sucky is the warped axles on the tender. It makes the tender wobble or waddle down the track. Not a huge deal though as it doesn’t travel far.

LA&C RR #2 is a Baldwin 0-6-0 switcher. It’s a favorite of the guys at the LA&C RR because of it’s reliability and easy maintenance gaining it the nickname ‘ole faithful’. Aside from doing daily switching service at Amboy and running the occasional local, #2 will sometimes gets pressed into service hauling light freight or even the varnish when the bigger locos are down.

Here is #2 freshly shopped:
