I am searching for any drawings for the wood beam trucks used around 1850-1860’s. Measurements would be great , however a picture would be sufficient. I am modeling the Civil War period and cannot seem to find anything other than HO or N gauge… Thanks
You did say that photos would be “sufficient.” (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
Back then there were many different kinds and types. A common one was a Carter Bros. Notice how short it is in length.
Steve those links are great. I also want to make some Civil War cars and was not sure about the trucks. Now I have no excuse.
Just remember Travis you need to pick out all the details in paint like they did back in the day…Note Johns Carter Bros pic with the stars on the bearing caps
JB’s pic shows a wheel base of 20 inches. There were also wheelbases of every two inch dimension from there to 66’’. Take your pick.
If you haven’t already these would be places to ask,

- This is a group for individuals interested in the history & modeling of American Civil War Rail Roads. Though we cover the ante-bellum period though the end of Reconstruction, our focus is American railroads from 1860 through 1865. Sample topics include the U.S.M.R.R., the W&A, the O&A, the B&O., sharing model & layout photos, souces of modeling supplies, & archival resources. We are proud of our ever expanding bibliography of primary & secondary souces on railroads in the Civil War. Our goals are (1) to help preserve & disseminate Civil War railroad history and (2) to be an aid to individuals modeling the railroads and railway systems of this period. Group discussions & sharing are encouraged. If you wish to join, Yahoo will automatically email you a copy of our Membership Agreement. To join you must respond through the yahoo system specifically stating that, yes, you accept all the terms of the Agreement. We also run a 2nd site (Civil War Railroad Pix) for our overflow photo archives.
Thank you,

Are you interested in modeling early railroads? This list includes
railroads both in and outside of the USA. The start of World War
1 is the general cut-off date for this list.Possible topics include: motive power, rolling stock, broad gauge, narrow gauge, different track styles, early trolleys and interurbans, US Civil war era, structures and much more. Where do I get horses in my scale? How about people in the right costume? What scale can I find the most stuff in? The Early Rail Model Kits Cooperative, our kit-creating special interest group is here:
If you’re interested in slightly later period railroading as
well, there's a group for that at: [1914to1940RRing](http://groups.yahoo.com/group/1914to1940RRing/)

This is the Car Builders Cyclopedia of American Practice from 1888. There are a few pictures previous to this point of two wheel trucks also but from this page on it shows the wood trucks with individual pedestals. It has parts names and a scale that you can take measurements from. You could probably probe around google and find an older one but I think this is covering what your looking for.

1879 version which seems to be the oldest. These will help you will all aspects of car building. great resource.
I have three…yep count em…of these Hartford trucks, nice but small for 7/8th scale.
