Large Scale Central

1:20 scale stuff

I generally model in 1:24 scale on my indoor railroad but I’ve been tinkering with some 1:20 scale stuff after building a “critter” for a friend who then changed to 1:29 scale. I used a power truck from a Bachmann 1:20 44 tonner to make this critter. (I’ve since used the other power truck to make a 1:29 scale boxcab for my friend). Right now I’ve got it running on simple battery power- a 5 cell NiMh pack and an on/off switch. The water car is the latest build, made from wood in the shop and a can. The wheels are plastic with turned down flanges and the hose is a piece of wire with some paper and plastic bits for the nozzle. It scales out to 12’ long. The last car is small gondola like tender that I used as a battery car for a small Porter. I’ve since built a new tender for the Porter so this little guy is just tagging along to make up the train. I’m thinking about changing the label on the water car to weed control as I’m really not sure what a railroad would use a water car with a hose for. I plan on making up a couple more little guys to tow around and maybe make a small switching layout to tinker on. Dave Hope this picture loads.

Hmm, can’t seem to get it load in the message but the link works.

Nice Critter Dave  There are a couple of problems with the filename that keep it from displaying as an image.
First is the use of the Ampersand ( & ) in the file name. The second is two extensions ( .jpg.jpg ). Just rename the file on your computer to get rid of those two problems and upload it again. It should then display fine.

Nice work.

Thanks Ray.
Jon, I can’t edit the file names in my freight shed. Heck I can’t even delete files from it. I’ve got a message saying my shed has expired in 1969 and it wants me to renew it. When I hit the renew button it wants money. I thought there were 5megs free. So I’m stuck with the crazy link I have here until I can figure out how to fix things in the shed.

Fred -

There is a My Files link underneath the regular Post a Reply box. From that window you can upload new files and delete existing ones in your 5MB of Free space. To get access to the full freight shed you will need to give Bob some dough. I think the back rent from 1969 is going to be kinda steep though

What I would do would be to rename the copy you have home on your computer, then come here to My Files. Delete the existing one, then upload the renamed one.

BTW - From the My Files window you can preview your images and just clicking on them will bring the URL right into the post you are composing.

Dave, You have to rename it without the & and the - and the extra jpg. This one is just critterncar

Thanks for the responses Jon & John. I understand the mistake I made naming the files and that I should upload a renamed file. My problem is that I can’t do anything with the files in the My Files folder. I can upload to it but I can’t delete the existing files in it. I get a message saying Could not delete when I have highlighted the file in question and clicked on the delete icon.
Now when I go to edit the original post there is no My Files link under the message on the edit page.
I’m using Firefox 3.0.3 on this machine. On my other machine, using Firefox 2.x.x I do see a difference in the way some things look on the whole site. The home page on the 3.0.3 machine displays the “phantom” figure over the Welcome to LSC panel rather than next to it. The 2.x.x machine displays the homepage correctly but I am still not able to delete files from My Folder on the 2.x.x machine.
I just tried IE and I don’t see a My Folder link in the edit window either.
Too much time taken up with this problem and its taking away from the intent of the thread-showing off a couple of 1:20 scale models.
Thanks again for the replies.
Dave

Interesting, lemme see whats up. Are you going through the “Freight Shed” link on the top menu, or the “My Files” link at the bottom of the reply page?

Nice!

Thanks Ric,
When I get the picture posting thing straightened out I’ll post better pics.
Bob,
I’ve tried through the Freight shed at the top and through My Files on the edit screen. Things are still screwy this morning. I’m able to see the files in the shed but I can’t delete them.
If you want to take this offline to with email that would be fine with me. I don’t want to clutter up things here on the board.

Here are a couple more pieces running on the 1:20 side. The carriage is scratch built along with a sculpted passenger. The three ore cars are Bachmann that I’ve added some details to including smaller chains. I have a bunch more I have to finish off to make a nice string. I’m using S scale couplers. They work well, are easy to couple and uncouple and look the right size for a small 3 foot shortline.

Looks good! I especially like the open air coach and the sculpted figure, both are very well done.

I still have a set of ore cars that need painting, plus I want to add Kadee couplers.

Those look great Dave. I think my first loco bash is going to be critter of some sort bashed from a Bachman Dizzie. I’ve been playing around with ideas and just removing one hood doesn’t quite get it there. I think your look with the lowered hood and small cab are closer to what is in my head.

Thanks guys.
Ray,
The S scale couplers are really quite a surprise. They work well and they do mate with the Kadees I have on my 1:24 scale stuff.
Jon,
Yea I thought the Bachmann 44 tonner was way too big and I’m looking for that small look. That’s why I’m doing some 4 wheeled rolling stock. The ore cars are pretty neat once you paint them up to get rid of the plastic look.
I picked up 10 of them and am going to make a train (skip in British terms?) of them. I did put up a for sale post for three of them as I don’t think I’ll use all ten.
I do plan on making a couple of shortie 4 wheeled box cars to go with the group.

I made a little boxcab for my buddy with the other power truck but for the life of me I can’t find the picture of it. I have a USA power truck that I’m going to cobble something together for myself, maybe a little traction boxcab.

My daughter gave me a toaster oven for Christmas so I don’t have to use the kitchen oven to bake figures any more, thus insuring domestic tranquility!! So I’ll be finding more figures hidden in the Sculpy and Premo I have.
Dave

Are the S scale couplers these?

Hmm…

Bob, Nope. A couple are actually American Flyer but I mainly use S Helper Service (http://www.showcaseline.com/) with the shanks cut down.

My buddy gave me enough to do 6 or 7 cars and I’m going to order more. Heck at $2.95 a pair you can’t go wrong and I think they look just fine. Dave

Here are a couple of new passengers for the open coach. One has been lulled to sleep by the slow passage of the train, or maybe it was a bit too much libation at the last stop.
