Scratch SD70ACe

I’ll have to go look at that stuff. Sounds like a great idea. I can’t tell you how many trips I’ve made to get supplies for this thing and it’s half done! At least I may have enough to do another one or two. I could have bought three RTR engines for this price too. Every time I run into another detail, it’s back to the drawing board and supply store.
I do enjoy the challenge and find some reward in building it. I’ll have a better idea of the challenges next time. I think some were spoiled when Burl offered kits. I wish I didn’t miss them.

For those small louvers maybe try Archer transfers as they have louver decals for o gauge.

Wow, thank you. I never saw that before!

I almost missed that on the homepage there’s a special running for a short time. You can get three pages of rivets for the price of two. Click on either the O or G gauge and add to cart from there.

Hmmm, does anybody make the modern EMD fans??? (SD70ACes and M-2s).
I figure I should ask first while on a roll and as I’m struggling. I got the Aristo ones from the GPs.

just keep pluggin’ away on the small stuff…

put screening behind the new vents. added detail to the exhaust stack. Played with a stock fan trying to remove the circular ribs and make it fit the modern look. I think I’ll need to make it from scratch too.

does she look better in the dark??

Well I guess if everyone’s doin’ something, I’d better get goingJust can’t get these perfect…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/public/album_photo/4f/b9/01/1b697_eab6.jpg?c=8a28)

I should add something to help me clarify a point. A while back I was replied to in what seemed a harassing manner to me, on another site.
I built this engine shell to published drawings. It matches as close as I could get it to in 1/32 scale. That is what scale the majority of my G scale engines are. At that time nearly all of them. As I was building the frame after the shell was near completion, I stumbled and couldn’t get the trucks up into the frame at the height I wanted the engine to sit. The engine looked like it was up on stilts.
At that time I grabbed a spare MTH shell and frame that I had from a GE dash 8. To my delight, the shell of mine fit exactly the width of the MTH frame. It seemed easier then, to modify that frame in length and detailing for an EMD, than to get my scratch frame to work by severely modifying it and the trucks further.
I had never intended to do that from the start. I was using spare MTH trucks and installing their control anyways. It’s what I use to run all my G gauge trains. If that was in anyway lessoning the quality of my build,
so be it!

Hey Joe, If it floats call it a boat. As long as it works, thats the important part.

Thanks Vic.
It’s funny that a fan is kicking my ars.

Joe,

Did you make the fan master yourself? Or is it a copy of a manufactured fan?

Craig

I took a spare Aristo fan and cut the top off. I made my own top. I should have used a fan from a USA SD70MAC as it would have been closer to the real thing. It appeared to need more mods to make it work.

I agree with Vic, Joe. Just because you use a manufacture’s frame doesnt make it any less of a model.

I got some great help from Daniel Peck with his tools. I just need to add some extra details.

I love the radiator sections on these locomotives. They look like they mean all business. Great job .

I like the whole thing. Say’s muscle !!

Is this 1/29 or 1/32?

if it’s 1/29, I’ll take mine in this livery

Beauitful job there Joe , First class job ! I was wondering if you were still working on it cuz you haven’t posted in a while .

I got aggravated with the grumblers on other posts. I wandered off for awhile.
I like some people here and thanks for the help to those too.
I also have not worked on this one much. It’s a rainy day project when I’m feeling good.
Made a new train storage building. Working on the outdoor RR. etc.
I’d rather spend my remaining days building stuff than argue with some of the …
