New tank cars enter service

OK, it wasnt just me that didnt understand his question. All cars of a type will have different numbers and/or reporting marks

Ok guess i asked it wrong. We know all cars have difference nbr’s.

Do you start out… in your rolling stock …starting with nbr. 1 and up on your R.R. or… using random nbr’s.?

We start with nbr 1 and up on our Santa Fe & Butthead Cove R.R. This way we keep track of how much equip. we have on that R.R.

“But reading what i see last post is it looks like it may be just random nbrs.”

Guess it was a dumb question and should of waited… lol.

Kind of wonder wheres the ladders on the side of the cars thro.

Bob, and just like the 1:1 guys, I try and keep my cars in groups. As in my boxcars are numbered in the low 600s, my hopper cars are from 130 to just over 200, my flats are in the 300s, and so on.

I’m with Maynard on this. I set sequences aside for certain car types and number the cars. I do not start with the lowest number in the group, but I stay within the group. i.e.: sleepers #600-699 but my only sleeper is #673(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

I think Bob like the # 3!

Wow, it sounds like you’ve cleaned it up a bit! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Bet them tank cars are hauling sludge… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

No…the sludge works is in Canada!

Bob, I didn’t think you were old enough to remember Fibber McGee! Not like some of us.

hmmm, So I guess that Bob’s tank cars won’t be doing a long haul… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

He could just send them up the road to the

I stay in a series, but I don’t usually number sequentially, like Hollywood said. That way it suggests that there are more cars in that series, somewhere out on the railroad.

I do the same, when I paint and decal freight cars… I do a series of numbers for each type of car, and try not to number more than 2 numbers together… Most modern series numbers were in the thousands, if not more so there are a bunch of number variations available without running sequentially…

I have awarded BD reputation points for a clever reference to an iconic and obscure radio show gag. As to Bob’s age; well he is as old as his tongue and slightly older than his teeth.

I too number cars in series but not sequentially. Does it really add to the illusion that there are more cars in operation than those modeled? Only the shadow knows…mwhahhahaha.

Whew! I am on a roll today.

True, but my railroad is much smaller. So different car series-es would be in multiples of 10 or 12.

Tank cars are among the most interesting of all freight rolling stock, along with the refrigerated box car. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Wonder if playing in Google would find refrigerated tank cars?

Like this?

or this?

Ahh. I knew about the insulated milk cars but was thinking about things with active refrigeration like the car above apparently has.

Forrest, from what i found searching for refrigerated tank cars, there are none. There are insulated tank cars, including the one in David Maynard’s post above. Th0se cars for hauling cryogenic material have rather sophisticated controls and that is what the box contains. So, if there are tank cars with active refrigeration my Google search didn’t find them. An extensive AAR document describing the various types of tank cars doesn’t mention refrigerated cars. I would have guessed there are some, so I am surprised to not find any information on them.

Bill, on the side of the tank car I posted, it says “Argon Refrigerated Liquid”. So while it may not be a refrigeration unit like on a boxcar, its still darn cold in there. So while you are technically correct, what I posted is close enough to a refrigerated tank car for most of us.

David, yes those cryogenic cars carry very cold cargo, but that is not the issue. They do not have “active refrigeration” and that is what Forrest mentioned and that is what I was responding to. But that raises a question in my mind. Old refrigerator cars used ice, so did they have “active refrigeration?” I conclude they did not, the same as a picnic cooler (or thermos bottle) with ice keeping stuff cold does not have active refrigeration. That leaves mechanical reefers as the only rail cars with active refrigeration.

Bill, yes, you are right. But the old wooden cars that were cooled with ice were called reefers, or refrigerated boxcars. And the question was would Google come up with something if one searched for refrigerated tank car. Well, I use Bing, but the answer was/is yes, it comes up with those cryogenic cars.

So if we narrow it down to mechanical refrigeration, then yes, only the mechanical reefers have that. But if we go with the original question of would something come up if we googled refrigerated tank car, then the answer is yes, those cryogenic cars come up.

So, depending on the question, we are both right.
