Well this might end up ending even before it’s started. This model is all messed up from the prototype.
Wrong: roof, ends, brake wheel, yellow stripe, side sills
Right: Paint scheme and road number.

I started early. Or I started practicing the oil dot filter technique on a different model.
I’m also practicing replicating the rusting. Technically this is unrelated to the build, so I’m off the hook right?

Don’t feel to bad, I also started a little early…well, sort of. I found the battery drive needed a little TLC to be made reliable again. Nothing big, just making sure wiring connections were fixed and secure.

Here are some grab shots I took when I got home from work today. This is of a Aristo drop end gon.
I forgot to leave panels blank, except for the end. It did have a previous attempt of “spray and pray” type weathering, but I think the overall look isn’t too bad. You can see the evidence of the “spray and pray” method by the grab irons. Definitely not doing that again! I think I was 10 years younger and dumber when I did that.
I need to work on the rust spots. The rust I tried was a AK Interactive Rust wash. Not really impressed on individual rust lines, but I think with refinement it could work in some situations.
Fire away with what needs improvement! And maybe I will have this model take a nice bath in 91% iso as well.

I will say, I rather do like the grime build up around the rivets and rivet seams.

This is an old Aristo Drop end Gon that I was practicing on. It’s one of those projects that gets set aside for years, and then when you need a weathering test bed you grab the aristo gon.
Yah those grab irons look huge! Kind of reminds me the LGB grab irons.

It’s not perfect, but it’s a start… I think I can manage to recover.
Ended up sanding off the lettering with 220 grit (should have used 400 or something lighter), so there are some sanding marks above and below the lettering. Also somehow the masking on the white strip bled through. Need to fix that as well.
One layer of oil fade. Doesn’t look too bad, but definitely needs more work.

Went and bought my 1 bottle of paint on my way home from a teacher workshop. Big mistake, I should have known better than to buy paint at a LHS that only has a few bottles of paint.
I had previously bought paint from them with no problem. Trying to restore the paint with some water, will give it 24-48 hours and see what happens.

Something to consider, you can sometimes use a little lacquer thinner on a brush or rag and pull some of the white downward in a streaking below the lettering.

Are you talking about the white lettering? Hum I might have to try.
The other white areas that look like streaking from the oils are actually overspray from when I masked the stripe. I thought I sealed the tape enough to spray, but enough white bled through. At this point with a oil filter on top of the factory paint I don’t think much is going to change. Thankfully this is only panels I did with oil.
I figure worse case scenario the whole model gets a dip in 91% isop. and Stan gets a order for new white decals.

I took a look at one of my N.P. boxcars with the idea of cutting off the sills. Big problem, the lower door guides are on the sill.
Off to a great start. Craig, really. Good touch on the sandpaper, and I’ll remember to use the 400 grit. I’m watching closely and learning every step of the way.
