Actually a little more needs to come off. The streaks on the panel lines are too wide. Getting closer, but I haven’t quite committed to a clear coat on this layer… And then other side. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)

I like it as it is. I think its great that you are trying to get this detail right, instead of just dunking the thing into a pail of rust coloured paint. All too often models are over weathered.

Thanks David. Weathering is one of those hard things. I don’t want a rust bucket, but I want stuff that looks used. I took a tiny bit more off and yes it looks better.

Now are you going to “heat warp” the panels from the insides to simulate dents?

I like the weathering, looked great before…

Not much has changed… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)Just a few more dirty q-tips…

Not going to try the heat warping on this model, but that is something to think about for the next one. Burl has figured out a good way to make the wavy panels in his castings, but I don’t think I want to go to that level on this one.

Liking the progress Craig. When I saw the first wash pictures I too thought it seemed heavy, especially along the bottom sill of the car. I like how you’re removing the weathering/washes, it’s shaping up very nice. Funny how weathering is add some then take some away. It’s like dancing, two steps forward one back.

I think you had mentioned or asked earlier about chalk fading with a seal coat, yes it will. Chalk will disappear some with seal coat. Key is not to go heavy with the first chalk coat after sealing it you can always add more, hard to go the other way after sealing.

Can’t wait for more updates!

More experiments today, but no pictures. A little chalk work of black and rusty\brown red around the upper and lower sides. Rubbed a little with my finger to blend in. Lightened up the panel lines and the other parts. Darn it no time for pictures yet. It will be interesting to compare photos of the steps to see what the visual difference is.

Trying to get back on track with this project. As soon as I clear the work bench off with the wiring project, I think this Brown Boring Boxcar will make an appearance. Stay tuned.

this is largely how I weather as well

put on too much paint then use q-tips to remove it

the process is more about removing paint than painting per se

this looks great!

Back on the workbench and starting the decaling process after getting the GP9 Martin Sant Widget/Protothrottle thing set up.

What are the trucks that DT&I used on that particular model?

100 ton roller bearings…

Converting my fleet over to roller bearing trucks vs friction trucks will take a while. So for now, they get the stock USAT trucks.

Couldn’t find the white DTI in the piles of decals. So went with black, and will try painting white over. If not, then I will have to find some white lettering.

Oooooo… I see an ESU Loksound 5 XL decoder in that GP9. Good thing large scale engines have enough room in them to allow for all of the wiring. Is this the engine you mentioned for the rotating beacon light?

I’m not sure yet on this one… I haven’t even figured out how I’m going to weather this sucker up yet. Way down on the list of projects.

But the BN GP30 and the BN GP9 for sure will get the beacon.

Craig,

Since you are nearby and a friend I will sell you a set of Aristo rollerbearing trucks cheap, if you are interested, give me a call.

Paul,

Will do later this week. I just might take you up on the offer. I might have to think about I could cast one up and make copies… (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-undecided.gif)

Ended up having to do a prototypical repaint…
