Compressed turnouts

A while back we had a thread about the complex junction for a UK station where several different methods were used to compress numerous turnouts into a small space.

That got me thinking about a problem I was having. Our initial plan was to add a 3 track storage facility… Going into this storage facility was a single track with two turnouts.

But then like all projects the thought occurred to have a fourth track that extended past the storage facility around a large tree and then extended out to our back wall.

The problem was that there was not room for a third turnout before the storage facility nor room to double track where the new trackage connected to the existing railroad as it would have narrowed the walking area more than desired,

The eventual solution was to build a compressed set of turnouts where the track separation distance between the two tracks was compressed from 8" to 3 1/2" for a short distance.

The top track on the left goes to the turntable, the top track to the right is our caboose track and then extends to the storage area, The bottom left track is the existing main line and to the right is the new extension of the main line through the storage area.

That is a tight spot. Did you cut leg or legs on the switches to get them to work in that spot?

While it may be possible to cut commercial turnouts to make a compressed turnout, these two turnouts were custom built for this location. While similar the two turnouts have different geometry.

Stan,
What do you use to build your custom pieces? Do you design a template first? It looks amazing
