Your Workshop

Ray,
You need to get rid of that telephone, unless that is what you were modeling.

I kept paper towel tubes then stood them in a box to make storage for my strip wood. For the really long stuff i used christmas wrapping paper tubes. Not the best, but the price was right.

My train shop is in my basement. Nice and cool to work in in the summer. I have a miniature collection of power tools including a drill press, belt sander and table saw along with a dremel and small battery drill. I used to have a 2x4 work area when i did HO now my work table is 4x8. Aside from a pile of hand tools I also have a stock pile of pin vises with various drill sizes in them so I don’t have to constantly have to change them out.

My wood/workshop is in my barn. I have a table saw, band saw, chop saw, drill press, bench grinder, joiner/planer & board planer along with the standard power tools.

The biggest lesson I have learned is that you get what you pay for.

Terry

OK Ray, you win! In a mess to mess comparison, mine looks like it was arranged by Martha Stewart

A clean bench is the sign of a sick mind.

Every time I clean the bench I can’t find a darn thing.

I’m the odd man out, but you knew that already. The clean work bench was posted some time ago, no need for more comments.:stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue:

To update a quote:
A Messy workbench is the sign of a busy mind.
An empty workbench is the sign of …

…you work too much!

now you won’t be able to fing anything!!!

naw - the stuff is still there, he photo shopped the second picture.

i just put up my stuff along a wall, so that i can either stand or sit on a stool in front of the (never empty) workbenches.

Ray and others. They say that some of the most famous creative people in the world have messy desks.

William F Buckley So, by association then we are all geniouses. Except maybe rooster, he cleaned his. LOL I dont have a picture of my workbench in my HO layout room but it rivals the messy spaces of everyone else here.

I’m no genius!

HJ, that is the messiest that I’ve seen your bench! You clean up that mess this instant!

Arent you Swiss HJ?

If so then you could liken your bench to finetunned like a watch or pocketknife or something like that.

I have to admit that I strive for an orderly workbench, but it doesnt always happen. Right now I have an Accucraft C-19 in pieces as I was doing a RC install and am going to repaint the boiler to a black color instead of green. Plus I have part of a scratchbuilt bridge from my HO layout on it plus some buildings half-built and a few other odds and ends. I’ll try to post a couple pics of my current work-area and also my proposed new spot.

Now that's funny! :)

I actually envy the guys who can keep their workbenches and surroundings neat and well-organized. It must be nice to know where everything is, and not lose something ten seconds after you put it down. I just lack the organizational gene.

MY “workshop” consists of a small (4’ long) workbench with a small Harbor Freight drill press (that I usually can’t get to for Kim’s stuff). Supplementing it is the top of the washing machine, the top of the deep freeze, the bed, the floor in the hall, and sometimes a medium sized food service tray on my lap in the livingroom…

Works out pretty well for locos, rolling stock and small structures, the bigger stuff gets worked on outside.

I have to second Mik’s comments about the lap trays. I used a wooden serving tray I found at good will to sit on th couch and spend time with the wifie while hacking apart the steamchest to an LGB Stainz. Got nice new piston valves out of it too!

I have a tempered glass serving tray that I use. When the weather is good (most of the time) I can take stuff out on the patio to work on it.
