This was my second layout, but the first one occupied the same area, in basically the same configuration.
Heh…a bit over 15 years ago…
I started by just putting some track temporarily in place.
And I discovered the yard was not quite as flat as I originally thought…
Then added some ballast…
I never really operated on it, but enjoyed it…
The next one used code 250 track and was designed for operations.

I guess that is some consolation. It just sucks to have to undo all that work. But, you get to start with a clean slate and avoid the mistakes you made in the first go around.

I started my RR build June 2007 and finished the main loop by late August. Here’s a few build photos and a video of the finished product.
This is Coco’s Cut unballasted.
Here I am Spreading the 1/4 minus Blue Stone ballast.
I set my level up to achieve a 4% grade.
Using plastic stakes, and my level set to 4%, I worked my way up the grade. We never have to worry about frost heaving so this method has been very stable.
Here I am risking life and limb. Notice the color of the Old Growth Redwood, the growth rings are barely visible.
This is August of 2007 with the “Golden Spike” celebration.
Dan, you seem to have a lot of the motion detector sprinklers throughout the layout, what , besides the koi pond is the need for them? Nice layout on everyones part. hope more people add to this thread.

Was actually thinking of the loop for display during the holidays, and was testing the ability of stainless steel to handle watering 3 times a week.
10’ diameter H&R Stainless steel rail, boy was that stuff hard to bend!

Pete, The motion detectors, AKA Scarecrow, were very important. I eliminated the pond last year after 20 years. We had Raccoon and Great Blue Heron problems. The Heron was the worst offender having eaten 15 of our Goldfish but never catching our Koi. After that I added the second Scarecrow to cover its landing zone. The Heron lure the fish to the surface by regurgitating their stomach contents into the pond bringing the fish to the surface. The Scarecrow was very effective at controlling me when I forgot it was on(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
