I don’t care about rivets Bill as I model by eye. However if i was to guess I’m going with about 225.
Thanks, Bill. Let’s just say I would have to take my shoes off to count that high and I still don’t think I’d have enough toes to get there
Here is my LGB #50 diesel with Rail Pro and battery all under the hood, I even cutout the grill for the speaker to blast through, all being said, this engine is likely larger
it still can get all the electronic under the hood.
I like the speaker /radiator idea, John. Mine would have to be a pretty small speaker at this point to fit under the cowling. I made an executive decision a few weeks ago to put the speaker in a trailing car. All other electronics will fit on the engine with the battery under the cowling and the RailPro card in the fuel tank. But I will file that idea away for use on a future engine.
I’m calling it done, for the Challenge, anyway. I’ve enjoyed working on this project and certainly wished I had more time to dedicate to it over the last 4 weeks. I still need to add the electronics and the LED’s in the lights but I’ll get to that at a later time. Here are some finished shots.
Front coupler installed
Control panel in the cab
And the obligatory seat, half of a steel drum turned upside down.
Is it time for MIk 2026 yet
That turned out great my friend. Very cool little backshop loco.
Thanks, Devon. I’ve enjoyed building my first engine. Wish I had had more time to spend on it during the Challenge, but I’ll keep working on it over the next few weeks as time allows. I’m also building a few short cars for this engine that are based on this simple design.
I started with the tank car that will house the speaker.
I’ve got that car built short of the end beams and couplers.
Here are the others planned so far in the roster.
I know I will add a caboose and maybe a few others.
Looks like a neat little work train
Really nice job Dan. I really want to get into 3D modelling now I can see how well you pulled this together.
Cheers
N
Reading your post over on the Glamor Shot thread you mention where R/C components will go in the future. I think you will be happier putting the speaker in the cowling and the battery in the trail car. This would allow swapping batteries easy and the sound would emanate from where the motor should be.
Good luck finding a RailPro sound you like. I’ve got some Goose files I made for Richard Beverly that I’m happy to share. They don’t work like a prime mover file since user sounds are either On or Off - No speed variation.
Just saw the glamor shots. I have to be honest that came out better than I expected. That’s a cool looking loco.
Jon, you are correct. I originally planned to put everything on the engine, but when rounding up the speaker, the only one I had on hand wouldn’t fit in the cowling so I resorted to the trailing tank car. Now that I chose to hold off on the electronics install until after the challenge was over, I think I will get a smaller speaker and install it facing the radiator as John mentioned above. Should still have plenty of room for it and the battery. When I do that, I will add some hinges on the cowling so it will open easily for battery change outs.
Thanks, Devon. I see a lot of possibilities for this little engine and others like it.
Dan, I agree, what a cool little backwoods hauler. Really came out nice.
Will you be making some small cars to go with it? Just curious.
Rooster, even Devon figured out the ultimate use of this locomotive (see his quote above). Obviously it will need a few tankers to haul the stuff from still to market
