Ooooo… I like that one!

OK - Thinking about those rafter tails Joe mentioned. I assume they had some detail that makes duplication tedious. Got to thinking about a key cutting machine (I have access to one at work). I wonder if it could be used to duplicate master for little details like this.

Hmm, that might be worth a try. The cutting wheels might clog up a bit with wood, but plastic tails might work. If you give it a try, keep us posted. I’ve a friend that could help if it worked.

Jon, nah, no “detail,” just a simple curve. I guess one could just round off the ends a bit. As for making rafter tails, for me the first one is the hardest because you have to get the slope of the roof correct, relative to the wall–or they’ll point up at the ends, instead of being vertical. Plus you have to make the tail the correct length, so when you place the roof onto the walls, the tail won’t collide with the wall. But once the first baby’s done, ya just crank out more with your Chopper. FYI, I glue the two roof sides together, reinforcing them in the middle with scraps that come from when you make the end walls. Turns out these little triangles are the same pitch as the roof and glued together, make a perfect support. Anyway, I lay the roof on its back and proceed to tack the rafter tails on, working along the edge. Of course, ya gotta measure and get the spacing right, so they’re evenly spaced and look nice. Pretty easy. Just a tiny bit tedious. Helps to channel Ray Dunakin here. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-smile.gif)

FYI, I just scrolled back over this thread and spotted my photo that shows the hotel. You can see the rafter tails and how they’re supposed to look. Ignore that big gap along the top edge where the tails meet the building wall. The roof, which comes off, ain’t seated right. Needs to get smushed down. Lazy workman.
