Winter stuff...........

This is basically the same engine, Pete. Just lettered different. And I have no idea what version it is, either. Seems there were different versions.

I tried originally to fit batteries in the side tanks, but the sides of the tanks bulged out.

If you look at the 2nd picture, you can see brackets inside the boiler that are squared off. They hold the motor block. And I had thought about cutting them off, but decided to put it all in the cab. The picture Don sent me the inside of the boiler didn’t have those brackets and the motor block itself looked a lot smaller. He suggested the same thing. He also managed to mount a speaker inside the boiler.

It’s all enclosed in the cab so it should be hidden.

There wouldn’t be any room for an on/off switch under the tanks since I plan to put the weights back in. See the first picture.

It’s a small engine and almost as much a PITA to do as the Shay I have.

I remember it was a pain to do, and yes, there were lots of different versions. Mine had the wheels pushed into a central plastic sleeve with the gear molded on but nothing to stop them falling off except the flimsy outside frames and the huge flanges. Mine never really worked, as the flanges meant it bounced over every switch check rail and frog.

I recently took it down off the shelf where wife had been displaying it for 20 yrs, and discovered it still has the recvr and batteries in it.

I used to run the hell out of this engine on my old track powered layout. It didn’t seem to have an issue with the Aristo switches that I had on that layout. It does have the typical B’mann over sized flanges.

If the TX ever shows up and I get it runnin, we shall see how it handles them now.

This one looks to have metal axles and the wheels are screwed onto them. I gave it a thorough lube job while I had it apart, too.

This one has metal axles with screws holding the drive wheels on. What type of gear is on the metal axle inside the motor block, I have no idea. But it does have 2 plastic gears coming off either side of the motor, driving both axles.

Trying to cram all this stuff inside the cab. I may paint the windows black to it isn’t so noticeable.

We’re gettin there…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Cool guys run stuff with blacked out windows as they are all the rage these days!

Looks like you got 'er running, Ken. I love the faraway shot that begins about 0:14 sec in. With the fog and bare trees, it looks great. Thanks for sharing. I saw one of these engines on evil bay the other day for I think $125 bucks or so, is that a decent price? Supposedly runs fin on track power.

I got this one in a set. engine, flatcar and a caboose for $125. But that was 20 some years ago. So that price isn’t too far off. Like I told Pete, I used to run the hell out this engine on my old layout. Some earlier ones had the plastic valve gear. This one is all metal valve gear.

Dan, for what it is worth, Oldest Son got one a couple years back when the B’mann railtruck the family chipped in to get him crapped out about 6 weeks out of the box and B’mann replaced the truck with this loco. We find Smokey tends to buck on track power, though perhaps this is dirty track, and “his” pilot truck and our various turnouts disagree about whether or not “he” should stay on the track. The whole model seems to “settle by the stern,” and perhaps more experience hands have figured out how to make this model balance out better fore and aft. Smokey is a beautiful model to behold, but whether it is our model of or our railroad or a combination of both, we have been a bit disappointed with how “he” handles on the track.

Oh, and Ken, your work is amazing and an example of how this model should run.

Eric

Thanks Eric. I never noticed it being stern heavy until I put all the RC gear in the cab. Before I put the weights back in the tanks, it was doing a wheel stand.

While I was working on it, I did see that the wheels were very dirty, and I don’t think I ever cleaned them. But I didn’t need to now. It had four pick-ups. Both drive wheels and the front and back truck. Like I said, it ran good. Never had a problem with it.

Ken, Eric, thanks for the information on this engine. I’ve looked at this model for some time, just can’t make up my mind if I like it or not. Ken, since you’ve had it a part, would there be any possibility of leaving the tanks off and turning it into a tender style loco?

Well, Dan, I don’t know. I needed the weights to keep it somewhat level. But that was from all the stuff in the cab. It’s awfully light without them. It would definitely need some weight in it somewhere. Depending on what version you get, you may have room in the boiler. I didn’t because of the size of the motor block. Sheet lead glued to the top of the boiler might work.

The main reason I bought it was because of all the neat little gizmos hanging on it. Seemed to have a lot of character to it.

Pullin a couple of flatcars

Looks and sounds great!

That’s the sound that came with the REVO. Chuff and bell sound OK. Whistle sounds like something off a BigBoy…(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Good looking little engine Ken,

How are you getting that great waether? Nothing but rain, snow, fog and 30-40 degrees here(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-frown.gif)

Another great video, Ken. The layout is looking good.

Thanks Rick,

The bottoms supposed to drop out this weekend. Yesterday the sun finally made an appearance after about a week.

Out there you could use a little rain and snow.

Getting my hand back in doing videos. Haven’t done one since I rebuilt the layout.

After inheriting my Dad’s computer I had to move everything from my old one to this one.

Thought it might be a good idea to practice with the video editing software.
