What's CA glue?

Hi timmy, from your homepage I see, you play mainly with Bachmann and LGB stuff. These do not couple very well with some couplers of other makers. They got their knuckle couplers mounted very low to the trucks. You started, fixing a bolster under your cabooses end. Why don´t you simply fix a piece of stripwood to the complete lenghi, to make it a wider bufferbeam. Underneath, at the same hight as your other knuckle couplers, attach one of these with the bendable head. They move almost 180 degrees sideways. If this is not enough to get around the small curves, fix the screw of the bufferbeam lightly, so the shaft can move as well.

I hope my model mock up on the 600 mm radius track is clear enough. I did not feel to get two cars ready, just to proof simple things like couplings for tight curves are possible. Have Fun Juergen Zirner

haven’t a clue what you are trying to say here.

Timmy,

The American Flavour cigarette packages are just a stand in for proper cars.
What Zirner is trying to explain boils down to the same approach you could take with the Kadee 838 swivel base

Warren mentioned that in this thread. Worth a try anyway, maybe it’s a standard item at your LS dealer.

BTW I did a bit of browsing on your website, is “The Piano Man” related to you??

I understood what the cigarette packages are for…

Did not understand the rest of his thread…

Depends on what you are referring to as “The Piano Man”… as there is no reference to Piano Man from my railroad website

Well, I also looked at http://timothydehan.com/

Timmy ,
In Juergens photo , the left coupler is a swivel head type , that can be seen from the picture . The one on the right is fixed , the body having no side to side movement . The one on the left can be made to swivel more by NOT tightening the fixing screw down hard , leaving the whole thing to pivot sideways , thus not putting undue side thrust when going round the bend . The technique is used on some commercial models , probably Bachmann I can’t remember . Anyway , it works .
For the other part , I think Juergen was trying to describe a full width buffer beam extension to make it look tidier rather than the half beam you’ve used .

www.timothydehan.com only goes to an ONLINE page which indicates the domain is up. As I stated, there is no reference to Piano Man from my Redmond Creek Site. With that said, if you followed the hyperlink to DeHan Computer Services, http://dehancomputerservices.com and their saw the hyperlink to Piano Man Productions, that would make more sense… and yes, that is me.

Timmy,

Yes, there is a certain resemblance between your profile picture and the picture of the Piano Man.
Hope you don’t mind me looking at what you do in the computer field.

Computer Field ? They grow the damn things , then ? Mighta guessed it , mine came from a batch with potato blght .

Hi,

So this thead finally is messed up as well with some Fuzzi Wuzzi wishi washi chitty chatty. Probably LSC folklore, one has to take as it is.

Was anybody at all ever interesed to give an answer to the questions asked. Seems as if was the only idiot who seriously tried.

So I take a break again here and look ahead for Muellers drawings, announced in the other coupling thread on timmy´s “problem”. I play witrh my trains meanwhile.

Have Fun

Got it! LGB knuckle couplers… Here’s the video: http://timothydehan.com/redmondcreekrr/images/LoggingCaboose/Caboose2.wmv (7.15MB)

Mo pictures…

Added somemore detail to this project: 1. I created a smoke stack from some brass tubing 2. Purchased some Ozar Miniatures details - grab rails - step rungs

Timmy

Thanks for building this car…I have really looked hard at those kits and had plans to get a few as $ allowed…May rethink, or go for it…got allot of RCS stuff to do first!

Thanks again for sharing-to you all!

Timmy, thats a really nice caboose but I have to ask, why are the cupola windows blue? is it solid backing behind? Not trying to be to be a crotchety rivet counter, its just a little disconcerting to me visually.

Just to throw some mud into this conversation.

I have…

20’ Bachmann cars,

20’ Aristo cars converted to double axle trucks,

20’ LGB cars converted to double axle trucks,

Link and Pin BODY mounted couplers,

and…Have ALL R1 curves!

Guess what?..works fine.

How? I simply use a longer link

I use 3/4" instead of the more usual 1/2" links, dogbone pattern (seen these in S. America) not the standard oval link. This gives me greater range of movement thru a curve, can even go thru reverse curves. On a few locos I use a longer drawbar type link, 1" to 1"-1/4" long, also prototypical from several logging and mining lokie photos.

The best part? NEVER have to worry about cars uncoupling.

Dunno... that's what came with it

Timmy ,
The blue stuff is only there to disguise the lack of an interior , usually.
Like Vic , I find it a bit intrusive , but that is not a criticism of your efforts . I think you have made a creditable job . I don’t have interiors in some of my stuff , but still leave the windows clear . Personally , I find that more aesthetically pleasing . I always promise myself that I will put an interior in some day .
Enjoy your models , that’s the main thing ,

Mike

I agree that the blue stuff is not quite pleasing and should I decide to tackle one of these models again will definetly use clear. But to me, the rest of the caboose turned out so much better than expected especially with all the side turns I had to make because of mistakes that I don’t even see the blue windows any more. And Mike… you are so right! Nothing beats playing with these things and having fun.

Surprising. I would have expected a better detail from NENG. I'll bear that in mind If I ever pick up one of their kits.

Thanks I was just curious

What I do to make my cabooses look as though they have interiors when they don’t is use a manila folder and make shades with it. Most of them just barely show, but one or 2 might be pulled down a ways. this leaves the feeling that there’s an interior and I never see beyond them.
