Large Scale Central

What have you custom built for your RR?

Well thankfully I don’t have any debt from my BA degree, and we ‘own’ our house. So hopefully our loans will be less then most college graduates!

I love that pic of Todd’s covered bridge, etc., bright, snowy, with the evergreens in the background and the rotary on the trestle. The paintjob on that loco of his is MIGHTY smart looking, dont’chu all think?

Great stuff guys!!!

More great stuff, guys!

That feed mill is sure going to be impressive when it’s finished.

Most of my stuff is custom built.

Left to right above street: Gas station, Goodson Hardware, Golding’s Cafe, Farmers Bank, J Radder 5 and 10. C.M. Oates Furniture behind the 5 and 10. Church and schoolhouse kits in the back. Below street: Clarke & Clarke, Attorneys at Law, Liquor store kit, barber shop and drugstore kit. My gas station was my first large scale building that I scratch built. Now, it has been joined by a series of scratch buildings - and I’ve started work on replacing the kit buildings on the other side of the street.

Dave, that block of stores is really great, especially the stairs on the rear of the structure!

Just be careful with that methane gas!

Very innovative David Russell using that plastic bottle for locomotive pieces. I have a steam donkey I built out of recycled bits like that. Here is another of my custom builds actually 3 in one photo. The open top water tank was one of my first builds and is 5 years old. I used a plastic coffee can and built around that so it will hold water. The yard office is a old combine with steps added and painted to the company colours. The 3rd custom job is a odometer car.

I know there are more custom jobs out there keep posting them for all to see and enjoy.

Thank you but please call me Rooster as I have been dubbed as I tend to get confused easily.

Hi all, David, dare I call you Rooster? I think you are much too modest about your builds. I have followed several of them and the work is exceptional. Here are a couple more of my old builds that are pretty much one of a kind. I don’t think I have posted anything about them on this forum in the past but could be mistaken. I find myself being that a lot anymore. This build is from about 2004 and is a 1:20 scale AH&D 3 drum hoisting engine and is all scratch built. I didn’t know it at the rime but the AH&D engines were very seldom used in the woods as “Donkeys” their more often assignments were as power for Pile Drivers, Derrick Cranes, etc. This one will be used eventually in my saw mill scene on the railroad.

Another build also from 2004 is a specialty boxcar to haul bottled “Natural Spring Water” from Deer Lick Springs to the world. Deer Lick Springs was a mountain resort from the 1890’s to the 1950’s and still exists but not so much as a resort. Although a railroad never came within a hundred miles of the springs, it could have because my railroad is based on a route through that area. I have postcards from my Grandfather to my parents written in the 1940’s from the “Springs” inviting us to come up because the roads were now open and he thought the old Pontiac could now make it.

The decals were made for me by Stan Cederleaf from original bottle labels circa 1920. The deer’s name was Tommy, a camp pet, according to post cards from my Grandfather.

Come on everyone post some more of your original works, this is great. Later Rick
