Of course politicos are more or less the same everywhere, sooooooo who's gonna do anything about it?
I would simply note that politicians are only there because voters actually PUT them there.

Thank you, TAC. If complaining about taxes was a profession, it would be the world’s second-oldest.
Because I’ve lived roughly equal time in the USA and Oz, have dual nationality and have worked several years in the USA in the not-too-distant past, I feel qualified to make two comments:
-
America’s alternative minimum tax is the worst tax I have ever seen on either side of the pond. It appears Congress is trying to change it, and not before time. I understand why it was enacted, and believe the reasons were fair enough. Why it hasn’t been indexed for inflation over 20+ years is beyond me.

Perth, Western Australia, is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. When I look at what my brothers living in New York and Connecticut have forked out for housing, health and education over the years, compared to our outlays on the same items, I feel fortunate. I love both my native country and my adopted homeland, but wouldn’t have the temerity to assert that either one of them is the “best” place in the world to live.
This thread reminds me of an old joke. It was religious in its original incarnation, but I’ll nationalise it:
An Aussie dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him at the pearlies and offers to show him around (the poor bloke is probably the only Australian in town).
They get to the Canadian section, where everyone’s skating about and noshing on walrus barbies. Our Aussie has a feed and a go at the skating - good fun.
Then Saint Pete takes him to the Mexican section, and the Aussie learns all about nachos and . . . well, other things. Terrific!
Then Pedro walks him over to a far corner of the paddock, and tells him to keep his voice down, because “THIS IS THE AMERICAN SECTION, AND THEY THINK THEY’RE THE ONLY ONES HERE!”
Insularity is not restricted to those of us who live on islands.
