What Happened?

I’m with ya too, Ric. In spite of all the taxes amd levies and gov’t interferance in our lives, I can’t think of one other place in this world I’d rather live.

OK that’s settled. No more bitching about taxes, the stupid government (who voted for those guys anyway), all those insane regulations etc. etc. Hey we’re making progress!  Always remember, with all the flaws, it’s “the best place on earth”. Ah … hum… did I tell you that’s what it says on the new BC licence plates?

PS Those two guys in the picture…? I guess you could call the “politicos”.

Is that Busch Columbia? It’s hard to tell with his hand in the way.

Great. First, Molson and Coors merge. Now Budweiser's taking over BC. Sorry, guys. You're f****d.

Later,

Of course politicos are more or less the same everywhere, sooooooo who's gonna do anything about it?
I would simply note that politicians are only there because voters actually PUT them there.

Thank you, TAC. If complaining about taxes was a profession, it would be the world’s second-oldest.

Because I’ve lived roughly equal time in the USA and Oz, have dual nationality and have worked several years in the USA in the not-too-distant past, I feel qualified to make two comments:

  1. America’s alternative minimum tax is the worst tax I have ever seen on either side of the pond. It appears Congress is trying to change it, and not before time. I understand why it was enacted, and believe the reasons were fair enough. Why it hasn’t been indexed for inflation over 20+ years is beyond me.

  2. Perth, Western Australia, is a wonderful place to live and raise a family. When I look at what my brothers living in New York and Connecticut have forked out for housing, health and education over the years, compared to our outlays on the same items, I feel fortunate. I love both my native country and my adopted homeland, but wouldn’t have the temerity to assert that either one of them is the “best” place in the world to live.

This thread reminds me of an old joke. It was religious in its original incarnation, but I’ll nationalise it:

An Aussie dies and goes to heaven. St. Peter meets him at the pearlies and offers to show him around (the poor bloke is probably the only Australian in town).

They get to the Canadian section, where everyone’s skating about and noshing on walrus barbies. Our Aussie has a feed and a go at the skating - good fun.

Then Saint Pete takes him to the Mexican section, and the Aussie learns all about nachos and . . . well, other things. Terrific!

Then Pedro walks him over to a far corner of the paddock, and tells him to keep his voice down, because “THIS IS THE AMERICAN SECTION, AND THEY THINK THEY’RE THE ONLY ONES HERE!”

Insularity is not restricted to those of us who live on islands.

If I move in with you, Ric; can I bring my trains with me ?
Absolutely Fred, your room awaits. I fear you must still maintain the Summer Residence in Nepean to satisfy the OVGRS. Otherwise, they may block our visit at the border.

Just make sure he’s wearing clothes. We have enough weather problems without his contribution…:stuck_out_tongue:

Caribou parka, sealskin mukluks, walrus-tusk harpoon ...

He needs to bring the flea powder too… :stuck_out_tongue:

…Fleas are not a problem that I carry with me…they gave up on my blood long ago…Sheap Dip solved the problem.

Actually, the little buggers bit him, got drunk, and fell off…

It’s hard to hang on during the Midnight Snow Dance when yo are drunk.

Politics (noun) Derivation: Poly… Greek, meaning many,
Derivation:tics…etymological term ,meaning blood-sucking vermin

Terry,
That is a very true statement, but I do feel I spend more time voting against a person and their policies of trying to control me than for the person that promises to do everything for everybody. The best part of elections are the people that raise a big stink about politics or policies, but don’t take the time to vote. The less number of people that vote, the more my vote counts.

Dave,
I’m very glad that you found a more comfortable place to live.

I know your Trick Dave;

Good CEEGAR smoke prevents fleas fron using you as a host.

Sheep Dip Scotch Whisky get’s rid of the little beggars.

After I shaved off my beard; I never had problems with fleas again.....

Always vote, and VOTE OFTEN

'Tis comfy, too - no snow to shovel, nor autumn leaves to rake. That said, I love the sheer grandeur of a northern autumn. Down here, the trees are different, and that jumped at me the day I arrived in Sydney back in 1971. I like American trees better - the four Arizona cypresses flanking our drive testify to that.

Sounds like you wouldn’t like Australia’s compulsory voting - think the fine’s gone up to $200 for not fronting on election day. Then again, Aussies vote on a Saturday, so it’s a bit easier for some, and Aussies use PENCILS to mark their ballot papers. No Florida punch-drunk punch holes here.

Taxes? Don’t like 'em any more than you do, and do everything I can legally do to minimise them (and anybody who doesn’t do that is off his rocker). Is there waste? Sure! Corruption? Some. Fact is, those taxes buy us reasonable hospitals, schools, roads and a system of fast, comfortable commuter trains (new line opens 23rd December).

Is Australia a “better” place to live than the US? Maybe that depends on how much you like snow!
