Large Scale Central

What do you call this?!

Not sure where Devon’s headed on that one… (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

But the rail truck is just the good ol’ LGB chunky motor block, dressed like a pickup:

https://www.lgb.com/products/details/article/24681

The passenger car hack is purty odd-looking…! But, as a toy, it’s fun.

Yeah, as has been discussed, the pivot in back of the truck rear axle isn’t in reality-ville. But the other thing is, on the coach, they’ve cut the main and center sills, and the main truss rods, for the notch. Which means the entire car sags down to the track, between the rear truck and the rail car. And there’s no real way to transfer the car’s load-bearing point from the hacked-out front body bolster to the high point pivoting on the pickup.

But, still, it’s fun-looking. And I’m only recreationally complaining. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

Why? Are there not enough potholes in the roads???(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

I really like that LGB fifth wheel buggie. I can’t believe it is a real thing that LGB produced. It looks more like a one off made by a guy that sought the answer to “What if?” .

Underside images on auction site Jim linked to reveal that it indeed is a bash. In real life that cranked car frame would not at all work with wooden construction, all-wood cars had enough problems with intact frames, but if done with steel construction it’s not any different from the fifth wheel livestock trailers around here.
Locating pivot/load bearing point at the lousy leverage location where it is on model probably stems from a decision to do minimal alteration of the railtruck.

So it is a one off bash and NOT a model that LGB produced?

Devon,

I’m in my shop right now designing one in 7/8".

Totally whimsey, but fun.

Another approach… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Needs a moonshine still on the trailer tongue, antlers on the hood, a clothesline across the rear platform, a few cinder blocks, maybe a couch for Granny on the roof, and a shotgun poking out a broken cupola window, haha!

Oh, and lots of junk…

Cliff,

do you mean like this?

How insensitive of you, Cliff. I can’t believe it. Don’t you realize those are their prized possessions? ! ~

Yes, that’s the conclusion I am fully confident in drawing based on the pieced together look of this image https://assets.catawiki.nl/assets/2019/2/13/6/9/8/6988f44c-7281-4dad-8b82-dffdfd83e5bb.jpg

With additionally this image, https://assets.catawiki.nl/assets/2019/2/13/f/2/7/f27bc134-e2f4-46ce-b544-3b2d1c4520aa.jpg

Those have the classic appearance of aftermarket modifications.

Finally, would LGB factory production really employ such a crude and basic pivot as a sawn-off bolt through a simple hole drilled in the railtruck deck? https://assets.catawiki.nl/assets/2019/2/13/8/5/5/855786a8-d89b-4a50-b7a8-7d7e3c57b43e.jpg

And if that’s not sufficient evidence for drawing that conclusion, there is this from the auction description,

Self-construction project of Rail Truck (AHA® Pritschenwagen) with passenger carriage as trailer.

Well, it DOES say it was a ‘homebuilt’, right?

LGB, Zelfbouw G is Dutch for scratch-built.

Cut the guy some slack.

The most surprising aspect is the somewhat adventurous price…

Yeah cut me some slack. I saw what Joe posted and then what Jim posted and I didn’t know the photos were of the same rig so I thought that if there were 2 of these things out there then there might be more that I have never seen so my next thought was that LGB might have produced these.

I sure do like it though. Maybe building one or something like it should be next years Mik’s Build Challenge ?

Some sort of rail vehicle would be fun.

I remember they sold that Beverly Hillbilly’s truck at Barrett-Jackson years ago.

I don’t what the hammer price was, but it was pretty high.

Trouble with a bash like that for the contest will be keeping to the $$ minimum.

Are you sure all y’all want second place, behind my diddle bugger?

I have the Ruby live steamer and a Sierra Observation in Daylight paint… in my ‘junk’ box.(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Just wanted to add something to the mix…

Made from a Hubley Depot Hack in 1/20 scale. If the kids and junk were removed and a shortened freight car body added it would be a poor railroads version of the RGS Goose. Might be worth pursuing as a project in the future.

Well, since Mik’s Challenge has that spending limit, how about a…

Hick’s Challenge! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

No disrespect intended though… (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

Here’s a steam coach that I bashed a number of years ago. It is constructed using a Bachmann combine kit and a Porter kit from North East Narrow Gauge (gone now). It is powered by a Magic Carpet Drive (NWSL) mounted in the rear truck. The boiler is mounted to the front of the combine and the drive frame is free to pivot under the boiler.
