Bart, any idea where I might find info on these other 4 truckers?

Fine locomotive Bart. Almost the equal of the many fine conversions you’ve done over the years too. You should do a whole roster photo of all the lokies together for the “come lately” folks who may not have seen them.

The Red River Lumber Co. in Westwood, California had a four trucker. Apparently it was a very tricky engine to operate as on sharp curves it had a tendency to pull everything off the tracks, a practice commonly referred to as "daisy chaining".
The Red River Shay was the one that N&W had built....went through one of the used equipment dealers to get out west......Shay locomotives dot com is a good jumping off point.....its a matter of tracking down company histories from there.....

SIGH…now I think…she needs a rear sanddome…and that yellow LED headlight…how hard is it to replace that with a white one?

Not hard at all. 4 screws and the boiler lifts off. The leads to all the lights on the front go to a circuit board in the smokebox. I replaced the red classification lights with white leds (tiny little things) but I did keep the yellow headlight.

Very easy to replace the LEDs. The class lamps slide out, revealing the LEDs which you just replace. Same with the headlight. The “legs” of the light clip onto the base. Pop those out to remove the headlight, insert a flat-head screwdriver into the hole at the bottom of the headlight and gently press forward. The lens and reflector will pop out, and you can just replace the LED. Just remember to note which wire goes the anode and which to the cathode.

Got outside between rain squalls this past weekend, 125 was in fine form…the track, notsomuch…

AS for inquiries about how the Bachmann K stacks up to my 4 truck Shay…

So…who’s bigger?

OK so its sat all winter, and the wait is killing me…I decided that 125 must have a rear headlight! The light itself was a casting I got in a ‘care package’ from Rooster and the LED was a donation from David Kapp. The tower its sitting on is fabricated from styrene bits I had laying around…

Nice addition.

Looks great! To “de-westernize” mine I took the visor and number boards off the headlight. I really like the graphics on it and the weathering. I always wished I had come up with a better “look” to my locos…

I dunno if the smokebox holes bother you, it did me, but trackside details makes a nice builders plate that covers the old plow mount.

The idea to add a rear sand dome has still not been tossed aside…just not right now…
