Wayne's 2025 MIK Challenge

No grinding, 40 grit belt sander at work. I hurried at lunchtime, about 15 minutes. I did go a little deep in some spots. Add another 10 minutes to find and install a new belt. The belt on the machine was an 80 grit (worn out).

I’m gonna take a wild guess and say a couple fingers of makers mark. Lol

Final fine sanding, then paint.

Still slowly moving forward. Frame pieces cut, drilled, glued and bolted together. Measuring the distance the truck needs to be to the frame.

Getting closer, but probably won’t make the deadline.

Wayne, all you need to do is slightly edit your napkin pic, like:

And bam, you’re good!

Do you mean, just enter the tank???

Why not? If need be, call the wheels “virtual” (but very real, nonetheless; a matter of which universe, tech, all that) and move on!

That might could negate the build challenge Cliff.

The 2025 16th Annual Mik’s Build challenge shall be:

“Rolls on Rails”

Anything that rolls on rails…!

Build what ever you would like that would have Wheels on rails!

Well the rules clearly state must roll on the track. Even if set the tank sideways, it will only roll a few inches and hit the top fill. :innocent:

See Cliff, Dave understands!

OK, yeah, virtual wheels would be stretching things for the MIK, I admit. Depends on the universe, mind you! (“Define wheel! Define rail!” That’s all I got from Philosophy 101 back in the day). But I’ll drop that line of reasoning.

Wayne, just trying to keep you in the race Dude. I failed, but you can do it! Don’t give up!!!

Wayne, will it fit on your pine wood derby truck, and it on a flatcar?
-or-
You could stage an unforeseen railway crossing incident.

Funny you mentioned the pinewood derby truck. That is why I originally saved that aluminium cylinder. Then re-thinking “pinewood,” the metal cylinder really did not fit the theme of that build. I am glad I still had it so many years later to use on this build.

I will finish this build, but today, I went to visit my 94 year old mom. We watched the game. Would have gotten the build much farther along but, today was the “Big Game!” Go local sports team, they won!

Since I wasn’t finishing on time, I found correct trucks. Couldn’t have my first scratch built car have the wrong trucks.

I’ll put the power trucks on this, and build a Crummy with a lights next!

Moving forward with this build now. One mounting steel screw rusted, PB Blaster to the rescue. The freight trucks are 1/4 inch longer wheel base than the caboose trucks.

Not that anyone would probably ever notice but in my opinion it will look much more authentic with those trucks.

Wayne,
You really need to visit Williams Grove. Trucks don’t really matter to me I go by the 10’ rule!

Let’s not forget the best advice for us newbies came from you this year.

“ Just to be clear, no grinding soft metal on a grinding wheel. 40 grit on a belt sander.”

Cheers!

Williams Grove Speedway or Amusement Park? Seriously I found it, train rides. #643, an 0-6-0 steam switcher and a diesel too.

Looking at the Park that closed in 2005, I saw they also had a Tilt-A-Whirl. That brought memories, when I was 16 I worked at a small amusement park. The Tilt-A-Whirl was my favorite ride to operate. It was an old unit made mostly of wood. Newer unit:

That would be it Wayne. That park is in ruins but still exists …https://www.wghsea.org/
Message me if you would like to meet up there sometime this year.
