Vietnam Gun Truck Models in 1/35

I was a PBR guy myself Ken. Now just cokes.

Iced tea for me…

Some were blessed with decent beer but not us who were left in Pleiku 1972… Pabst Blue Ribbon and Miller Low Life. That’s it for brew. Many converted to mixed drinks but I don’t think Fresca and whiskey tasted very good. It got so bad that the exchange was selling a case of Fresca for $.24, that’s a penny a can !!! You should have heard the smokers complain about the lack of choice of smokes. Remember someone mentioning lots of Kools available. Yuck… Some I know when into town and used the black market.
You version can’t be much different as that is the true facts.

Cheers, The Old Fardt in Oregon

Ever see one of those trucks in 1/20.3 to 1/24? I’d love to have one radio controlled.

One of my first jobs was pushing railroad cars up an incline to dump trap rock and cement out over storage bins. 10 wheel drive and a coffen shaped piece of concrete and steel over the rear drive wheels. Boy could that thing push.

RIc,
I think some of those bigger toy military things are 1/24 or 1/20, not sure. Can’t recall the name of them off hand. Have seen a jeep in them, but not a deuce. Daryl, I was a PRR man over there, now it’s diet CHerry Coke or sweet ice tea(old Okie boy!).

Finished Bounty Hunter, sent pix to Lee and he loves it. Dropping it off on my way to Marty’s on Thursday. Lee lives in Lincoln, which is on the way. Sure had fun with this, will sorta miss it, but it will help pay for my new Pacific and Aristo R/C unit.

My unit C 1/1 Cav was at Camp Faulkner with F Troop late 71 -72.

If you ain’t cav …

When I was in-country, the gun trucks had cannibalized APC’s on the back of 5 tons. The other trucks were the “minesweepers” where a five ton was loaded with rocks and the driver would sit on the windshield and motor the truck in reverse up and down Highway 1 south of DaNang. Crazy mo-fos, them.

Hi David,
We had several of the APC gun trucks in 27th Trans Battalion. I always liked King Cobra, had neat graphics on it. First gun truck model I made was of it.
Good book on Nam is ‘Tank Sergeant’. It’s set in the area between Qui Nhon and An Khe. Guy was one of the tankers guarding the side of the road, man he went through some adventures!

I got this info off Amazon. A good read, I was a tanker after Nam in our local guard unit, was a TC on several M-60 variants we went through. Stepped down when they got the M-1’s did’nt want to uptrain on another tank right before getting out.

Awesome Jerry. I have a 1:35 scale M-113 sitting on the shelf to build. I can only hope to get half the detail and realism you’ve put into those trucks.

I drove APCs and a Sheridan on the . last ground combat mission in Vietnam

Dear David,

Thank you for your service to our country.

Good to have you home.

Thanks guys. David, you should check out the Armorama web site. Lots of good ideas there on modeling armor.

Let me know when it comes out and who it's distributed by. I wouldn't mind reading that.
Hi, Just a quick posting to let you know that "The Hard Ride" Vol 1 (Vietnam Gun Trucks, by James Lyles) has been reprinted in the USA and is available again at this website:

www.vietnamguntruck.com/hardride.html

Or people can email for info on how to order by snail mail:

[email protected]

I happen to have the Full Scale replica of the Vietnam Gun Truck “Psychotic Reaction” and worked with the Author James Lyles to get Vol 1 reprinted in 2009 in time for the GunTruck Reunion in Pigeon Forge, TN.
The 2010 GunTruck Gathering will be in Carlisle, PA August 4-8, 2010
I’ll have more specifics about the Gathering posted soon on the website:

Thanks for reading,

Nice to see your post Dan. His replica of Psychotic Reaction is AMAZING! I’d like to mention that a group in the UK built a replica of the Red Baron, which was in my company in Vietnam. Wayne Dobos(who painted/created it) flew over to see the replica. It is featured in the current issue of a UK military publication. A guy near me contacted me about making a replica of Snoopy, which was also in the 444. You can see pix of it here:

Nice trucks! I saw a few trucks in-country with APC carcasses on the back. Was I seeing things?

That depends. What were you smoking? :P

Cool stuff guys.

Jon.

Quite a few gun trucks were made using stripped down APC shells. Paladin, Sir Charles, the Big Kahuna, Outlaw, King Kong, the Lifer and a few others. King Cobra was my favorite in my convoys and in the motor pool, had a cool cobra graphic on the side. It was my first gun truck model.

Here’s a shot of King Cobra. Sorta big though!

I was in DaNang, late getting to the picnic (1972-72). A gun-truck, “Lifer” sounds familiar, but many of us had names on our APCs. One I was on for a bit had, “If you ain’t cav you ain’t shit.” on the side.

We also had minesweeper trucks, deuce and half or five ton that the driver would sit on the windshield (folded down) drive in reverse with the throttle pulled out and the bed full of rocks. Those were the guys that had to be smoking something.

Glad you made it home David! Get to a reunion, they are FUN!
