V&T Snow Plow

Cliff,

Truly amazing. Kid-zilla wants one. I think I’ll let that go to the very, very, very bottom of my “to-do” list.

Eric

Question for you Cliff: you seem to have 3D printed some rivet-like details on the leading edge of the upper part of the plow (where it curves up and starts the V shape) but didn’t 3D print the rivets on the main part of the plow. Why is that? Is there a technical reason (like resolution)? Or something else?

Inquiring minds want to know (at least mine does)!

Thanks. And again, awesome work…

You’ve all been so kind with your comments, thanks my friends!! I’m very glad you like the outcome!

Thanks Brotha Jim, great question.

Um… let’s see if I can remember… At the time I modeled the printed bolts, I felt like the look of thru-bolts with nuts was ok; but later, I realized that was dumb (they’d just catch ice), but didn’t remember to do anything about it. Also, the flanges were thin then – too thin to put rivets in from either side. But, the initial printed blade results made me thicken that area up a lot. I should have put holes in to accept the new-found jewelry pins – clipped real short, and driven in from either side.

So, no technical reason, just an artifact of the model.

Cliff

Wow Cliff as usual with your projects I am blown away with your ability to figure out some of the most amazing things. Glad to see you into the 3D print.

Wow a learning curve but lots of fun. I have printed so many parts with great results.

Your designs are great and mostly very authentic and very prototypical looking.

Keep us informed.

Dennis, thanks very much for your generous remarks, I really appreciate it.

Looking forward to snow !

Guys;

I have never tried to use my (Aristo) plow, but I have read two cautions on other sites concerning using a model plow: 1. The plow needs to be the same temperature it is outdoors. I.E. If you are planning to plow real snow, you at least need to leave the plow outdoors overnight (covered porch, carport, etc.). Otherwise, the snow melts, then refreezes, and eventually the plow train is mired in a slushy mess. 2. I have read that one should spray the plow blade with Pam cooking spray before plowing. In the 1:1 world, the weight of the snow allows it to slide from the blade. In the various scales that run on #1 gauge track, a little help is needed to keep the snow from simply sticking to the plow blade and piling up on the track until the locomotives say “I QUIT!!”

Have fun, David Meashey

Great points Dave, thanks for that. I’ll try to remember them when I bring out my Aristo plow. Force doesn’t always scale down the way we’d wish!

This model though is mainly cosmetic; the resin isn’t super strong. It could push light stuff in a photo shoot, but not much else.

Rooster, now that I know you’ll be looking, for sure I’ll bring 'er out on a snowy day and take a pic. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

One final update to this project. At long last, I got back to assembly and installation of the second plow on the 4-4-0. Eventually I’d like to detail the loco as the V&T Dayton, but for now I’m happy to just be done with the plow part. Here’s a few pics.

Here’s the future Dayton with the (maybe) future Merrimac, a mogul. These sister V&T locos shared the same plow blade, but I thought it would be fun to portray them each having their own.

Cheers,

Fantastic work Cliff.

Oh yeah, Cliff. Now let’s see the shot of them heading at each other at 50mph!

If I knew how to do it I would include a picture of the crash on the Adams Family Railroad.

Lou, that would be spectacular, for sure! I got pinged along the same lines by a friend in the V&T historical society, who said that pose was practically impossible, unless the two locos started from either end of the line…

For the record, I was going for the promontory look. (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

With all that swagger on your amazing 3D production skills an accuracy in derailing, Where is the snow load they were clearing? (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Great work Cliff

Great work Cliff

I would have, but you Pennsylvania guys have hogged all our snow so far this year! (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-foot-in-mouth.gif)

This is the first time I’ve gotten credit for that, and I’m genuinely touched! Thanks Dave!!!
