Transporting to and from Shows/Operating Sessions

Ok here goes, hopefully the pics!!! When I click the freight Shed link in the post reply box I get the freight Shed drop down but nothing showing, just the header. But when I click on Freight Sheds above I see my pics. Do I need to create a directory and or purchase a Freight Shed??

I found this at Lowes in the Contractor area. It has wheels and a handle:

I carry the 2 ladies, padded:

It’s nice because I can wheel it. And there is room left for a layer of cars on top:

I even bring it to train shows because it fits in the back of my truck for goody storage, and it stays dry. I think it was about $24.95.

Still not able to get pics from the Freight Shed into a post, not sure what I’m not doing correctly, Oh well!! My engine transport cases will be at the Amherst Train Show in West Springfield, MA this weekend and if any of you attend this show, stop by the Mohegan & Pequot layouts both HO and G are in the middle of the Young Bldg. in areas #84 and 85.

I had my brother whip me up 5 of these for show engines and I lined them with foam.

Stack them 5 high in the Train Trailer and off to the show or out to the layout for

running.

My boxes are are one loco onlly and well paded with foam. I use 1" and 1/4 or 3/8 ply for the sides. I also pad the bottom to protect the chasiss and drivers. Metal handle and a hinged door. They slid into the truck bed nice, note there is a shell on the bed!

There are a lot of good ideas here. In seeing what everyone has done, I’m going to follow two ideas particularly…Keep it light, like firring strips maybe and 1/4 inch luan, and, two, I’ll make sure the boxes or crates are all the same size so they can be stacked.

Having no large vehicle, I find I need individual boxes. I stack them on a 2 wheel dolly to spill in the middle of Cozad’s driveway when one wheel hits a rock.

John,

The ‘same size’ idea is good, but in practice you’ll end up with a lot of padding where the short cars don’t fit between the ends.

If I was starting again, I would have 2 sizes: 18" inside for freights and locos/tenders, and 30" for coaches and longer stuff. Stacked 3 high and clamped/clipped together so they don’t move in the back of the car.
That still wouldn’t handle a bunch of USA streamline NYC coaches to go with the Dreyfuss Hudson . . .

hmmmmmm…very interesting…I’m thinking an 18 x 30 box (or something like that) would fit short stuff vertically width to width side and long stuff horizontally length to length side…I’ll try drawing something out after I finish my challenge build.

John,

Build the box’s as big as your biggest car then you have no worries, that’s what I do.

Nick

Or you can build boxs for engines and store you rolling stock in these Bread tray.

I pad them with carpet padding and can store up to 4 cars up to 55 ft USA hopper cars.

Makes it easy to get the cars out to the layout or to show and they stack nicely.

Just a suggestion.

I suspect you will find an 18x30 box is (a) too heavy and (b) difficult to carry through doorways, as it will have to go lengthways and then you’ll be trying to hold both ends. Ask me how I know, or go and look at the door frame into my garage!

Ive had no issues with that, but I’m flexible.
