Large Scale Central

Train Wall

Wow! That made my day. Not kidding --i have been working hard at my “real” job, collecting rolling stock and buildings, paying weekly for layout installation (steep hill, lots of fill and trestles and bridges) and i just was thinking about all the Bachmann boxes piling up and the passenger cars i bought used with nothing but bubble wrap to cover their nakedness … and, you see, there is this long carpenter’s bench in my barn, with a shelf over it and i was thinking, “Hmmmm, shelves, how would i install train shelves?” and i came here and here it all is. What a fantastic train wall. Mine will not be at all like yours, but you have given me a vision and a goal. Thanks! And congratulations on a job VERY well done.

To me that space in front would make a great back and forth track! HHmmm

So it has taken me a while to get back to this project but I finally had a chance to make a few modifications.
Following on what Sean had mentioned 2-years ago I decided to build another shelf and put a automated reversing track in place, plus it would double as a test track for me to work on my locomotives over the winter.
While in the planning stage I also decided to somehow add a test track so I could run my American Flyer locomotives.
After doing some measuring and sample testing I decided on putting the AF test track on the edge of the existing bottom shelf then adding another shelf a bit lower for my large scale track.
So here are some pics to tell the rest of the story.

Looks good Vinny, Great build.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Nice! i hope you never have even small earthquakes in RI - I’d hate to see any of that topple off the edge (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)

Actually, Rhode Island does have earthquakes. Remember one when I was a child there in late 1960s early 1970s.

Spent the first 5 years of my life in San Diego, and Long Beach, CA, but the only earthquake I remember is from Rhode Island, go figure.

Vincent,

Your train wall is gorgeous! I’m jealous that I cannot possibly do that here in So. California…just looking at all your stuff on those shelves makes me cringe. Earthquakes are a fact of life in our area and most of these are under 4. As a matter of fact, my 1/8th scale rolling stock is stored on double high steel storage racks…bottom row about 6 inches off the floor and the second tier about 30 inches off the floor. These racks are on steel rollers so they will move with the motion of a quake. In a large quake, the entire garage will come down, so that condition is out of my control :)! But, I DO think about it…what if…

Again thanks for posting your wall. I love it!

Spectacular, V, just spectacular, and the collection that’s up (you said you have more!) is doubly impressive, especially since you get a chance to see most it in one great view.

Vincent,

Wow!! Looks great, nice job. Like Gary, I live in earthquake country and couldnt afford to lose everything when the big one hits. I hope to one day be able to display all of my N Scale Locomotives and rolling stock…but with a glass front so they cant go anywhere when an earthquake hits.

There is about 20 more locomotives and 50+ cars on other storage shelves and displays around the house. I really need to stop!! But I enjoy collecting different pieces that catch my eye. At least now I can run a train while I am working on stuff in the basement seeing how we shut our garden railway down during the winter months. (That will be getting closed down next weekend most likely)

Oh, so glass won’t break during an earthquake?

I think you need to rephrase that and say "we (except Shawn) shut our garden railway down during the winter months. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

It looks good Vin. You def have a nice collection (well not counting the powered boxcars(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif). I enjoy my reversing unit. I actually enjoy sitting in my formal room now.

I really wish I could run in the winter months, but it would require adding some track and another switch to bypass going over the pond.

We take the bridge out over the pond every winter so it does not get destroyed, plus it gives me time to do some maintenance on it seeing how I cant really work on it when it is in place!

On the reversing unit, very happy with the PIKO unit I installed in the basement. Works as nice as the LGB unit I put outside on the railway.

The only difference is the LGB you can set the rate of stopping / starting time, where the PIKO unit it self adjusts to the amount of voltage that is supplied… so you really have to pay attention when you change locomotives so they dont go further than the track run off at the end of the line!

Thats good to know the difference between the two. Being able to adjust the start and stop time is big.

Nice wall Vinny!

Don’t think I have ever seen Shawn’s RR plowing snow during the winter months. Perhaps he is to busy plowing other things? Rephrase that again and say (except) Shawn and Rooster’s RR’s shut down over the winter months
