What is the significance of calling it “Run 8”? Not catching, unless it means notch 8 and then that seems fast
No it may not mean fast as notch or run 8 is used on grades with heavy freight just to keep it moving. It’s a power thing This is a extremely well written sim and everything and that means everything has been written into the sim to get as close to prototype as possible.
So what does it take to fire it up and use it?

And a pretty good computer.
Ralph
Run 8 Train Simulator runs on MAC with VM Ware/Windows Vista/XP/Win7 32/64 bit/ and Windows 8 operating systems. And 700 meg of hard drive space is needed.
These are the minimum computer specs we recommend:
CPU AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.80 GHz
RAM: 3 Gb RAM (run8 will only use around 2 max due to DotNet memory management stuff.)
Video Card: GeForce GT440 1Gb VRAM
Thanks Ralph, now I need to go to my resident expert (son in law) to see if I have room and proper software. So once its loaded, it is free standing? Meaning totally on the computer and not needing an internet hook up. Wondering if I can put it on an old laptop?
Ric,
Unless you have a fairly good gaming-specific video card it’s not going to run. My laptop’s three years old and, had I not bought it refurbished, would have cost $3000–top of the line, or very near top of the line, and it barely meets the requirements for Run 8.
I dabble in Trainz, but it has a lot of adjustment. If you want to -run- trains, Microsoft Train Simulator’s still probably the best option out there–there’s a ton of free addons made by the community (mostly available at http://elvastower.com), and if the graphics don’t look very good, there’s a new “game engine”, basically a whole new graphics and physics processor, at http://openrails.net. If you just want something that works out of the box, and you’re okay with spending significant money if you want any more locomotives/rolling stock/routes, Train Simulator 2014 (horrible name) is fine.
The only one of these I’d expect to run on an “average” computer of more than 2-3 years old is Microsoft Train Sim.
I’ve tried Microsoft’s train simulator, and had problems with it, basically, understanding how it all worked…
I do have Trainz’s simulator programs, both the 2006 version, and the 2012 version, which I have run on occassions… These are pretty good simulators programs, and no problems for me…
I have heard of Run8, but I haven’t gotten around to trying it…
I would rather watch paint dry haha. I could never get into the train sims, too boring for me. I would rather play outside or set a loop of track up in the house. Then it could be my A.D.D. that keeps me from playing it.
Shawn, I got into simulators because of my love of aircraft…
There used to be a great flight simulator program called ““CTP”” Commercial Transport Pilot…
It was a ““Gate to Gate”” passenger plane simulator… One started out in a B-737, after the 3rd flight, you were given a ““Checkride””… if you passed the checkride, you moved up to a B-767 and longer flights, again, after the third flight, you got a ““Checkride””, if passed, you stepped up to a B-747…
It required setting all the radios to the frequencies for groind/takeoff, the departure control, then route controller… Also required one to set the Nav systems to the ground beacons…
Was a good program, but it vanished from the market, quickly…
watching paint dry is really rather exciting, problem I have, is i’m shade blind, so it’s hard to tell which area is dry and which is wet…
Just remember, the most exciting sport is golf… It moves along so quickly…
With MSTS be aware that there are some routes for download about the place that are really cpu and especially video and v ram intensive. to the point that until I went and purchased the Scenic route and Seligman, I had no problems and then bam. video card could not hack it. that was why I built this confuser. Frame rate dropped to around 5 frames a second. Unplayable. After I built this then frame rates went thru the roof at around 70. Playable. then I found run 8. Confuser idles along.
Thanks all, for your thoughts.

So you’re the guy who puts up those “Dry Paint” signs?
Lou
