Tongue-in Cheek Railway or why I don't have an outdoor layout

Interesting Jack, let me know if you need a hand (in trade for a ride or two of course).

I have sent you this link, haven’t I?

The railroad is more amazing in person than in the photos!

Not only that, John, built it to get a “break” from his HO empire.

Wendell,

There are at least two commercial gauges smaller than 7.5", but I’m just not attracted to them. I don’t even like 1.5 inch scale on 7.5. I get visions of that monkey and football that is so often mentioned on this site.

I thank Ralph, but the prices of the items he posted are w-a-y out of my league. In fact larger is cheaper if you can find surplus industrial items. I have located some real 18" Diesel locomotives for well under $4000. That is actually cheaper than most 7.5" stuff. The track is more expensive, but you have the equipment savings.

You can indeed buy a real loco cheaper. The same site has an Alco S4-$18,000
With metal prices so high lots of old rolling stock is getting scrapped.

Hi Garrett, I’ll even promise some cab time. The closest I might come to steam is a second hand 18" air powered loco. Checking on a price now. Stop! Rescind that! I was shopping one of these till I found this photo showing the relative SIZE. Jack

The day I was there, he was operating on both layouts. No steam tho, just the gas loco and the (at that time) new coach. It rode REALLY well, you just don’t have both passengers lean the same way the same time.

Wow, that’s amazing! I wonder why they chose to use such a narrow gauge? Seems like they could have gone to 12" and been able to build more stable equipment with a bit more interior room.

Would mess up the scale/gauge tho, but they did get a 12" gauge shay tho, they were building shop trucks for it when I was there.
