OK, so there was an ulterior motive, too. "You can't bitch until you try" -- This will be the 3rd item I "tried" with them.... so, if they publish, or don't, I 'tried'. And I can now honestly say what I really think ;)

Mik, All:

All print magazine publications (model railroad or other) I am aware of look for SUBMISSIONS. While Mik offered Kalmbach the use of anything they want off his website, that is not the way the traditional publishing industry works. They only publish material that is submitted. Even then, they only publish those submissions that comply with their guidelines. In rare and exceptional cases, an editor will work with the author to correct deficiencies, but the author has to first submit the material.

Even a very popular and prolific author / columnist like Kevin Strong has to SUBMIT his material. Print magazine publishers do not maintain in-house research and authoring personnel who mine the internet, websites, or other sources to find material to publish.

The bottom line is that there is very little content in any print magazine that is authored or created in-house. Why not read Kalmbach’s (or other magazine’s) guidelines, then write and submit an article?

Happy RRing,

Jerry

Jerry, I didn’t just ‘give them access’ I also submitted items that I was working on via email link. Living on less than $700/mo, I don’t have money to waste on ink, paper, and stamps on a fool’s errand. They “don’t want it that way”? Fine. THEIR loss, not mine. It’s the Twenty-damned-First century, adapt, evolve - or go the way of the buggy whip maker. And when is the last time you said, “Darn! I’d really like a new buggy whip.”?

For all those who have something different than the “same old, same old” to contribute.

@ Wendell

One more impression regarding the lack of LS in MRP, since MRP flies under the MR banner it is possible that a lot more emphasis is placed on Model . OTOH if Bob Springs would submit his plans together with some of the excellent pictures, who knows what Tony K would do in that case.

Kalmbach’s targeted market segment isn’t me. Now, off to enjoy the afternoon

{uhh, can we say “targeted market segment” or will that incite some crazy dork into violence against market segments?}

Says they have a “large backlog” of submitted articles… Then why don’t they add about 4 pages of actual content to their magazine? (Or does that fall under the old ‘don’t ask stupid questions’ rule?)

Maybe I’m stubborn, maybe I’m lazy. Maybe I just don’t WANT to go through the trouble of reformatting stuff, especially when they just said that they ain’t actually gonna PAY you doodly until they publish the 5 article? (That’s how I read the $15 per submission, $75 minimum thing)

Are you SURE they really want folks to submit stuff? Or do they think THEY are doing YOU a favor?

Several sentiments come to mind. None of them printable on a family forum.

Mik,
My little published “bit” was paid for, upon acceptance. It was probably close to a year before it was published.
It was submitted by email. They sent me an advance copy and I was pretty happy with the entire experience.
I haven’t submitted anything since. But haven’t ruled it out should I find myself doing some thing interesting

On to GR.
I knew there was something a bit off. The “Cascade & Silverton” layout is listed as approx. 14ft x 34ft. Hmmmm … really? Turns out the wall where the stairs are scales to 22ft. I guess squeezing it into 14ft would take some doing. Anyway I’m doing a little design exercise; having just the one industry (Bitteroot Mine) is a bit skimpy. Lets see what one could do instead.

Later …

I also got the “large backlog” when I inquired some time back, but who knows how much of that is really good stuff and how much is junk. I would like to submit my layout but several things are against it, one its indoors - not that thare is no “garden” around it, but that there is no backdrop, just the very ugly rest of the garage, I was going to digitally blot out the ugly, but according to their submission guidelines thats not allowed, really? even for a stand-alone indoor layout? Also I really dont have time to set up and do a full photo layout with large megapixel images, let alone the proper photo accessories to do it justice, so any pictures I will take will be catch as catch can, besides I’ve noticed that on some layouts Marc is credited with the photograghs, so I wonder how do they judge what they will accept from the submitter vs sending Marc out to take the pics for the actual article. I dunno I’m interested but I also dont want to knock myself out for nothing.
