Large Scale Central

The "Original" Kittom Lumber Company. Part #2

Like when I was a truck driver. But I didn’t talk to myself.

Yes you did.

No I didn’t

Yes you did! And you always argued with me.

No I didn’t.

You’ll never be lonely!(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Talking to one’s self is acceptable. Answering one’s self is leading to insanity…

So arguing with one’s self is worse? Uh oh…

Greg

Oh, then I guess I am into the realm of insanity. At least I am not alone.

2 and a half months later the backwoods engine house is finished.:glad:

The tar paper roof will keep snow off the locomotives and the hostlers.

The build of this structure has taken so long that some more Winter trees have sprouted up around the EH.(http://www.railroad-line.com/forum/images/icon_smile_big.gif)

Thanks for looking. Doc Tom

Burn barrel by back door ?

Doc Tom,

Very nice! I’ve seen tea lights used as a flickering fire in a barrel. Ahh, but that’s in Largescale, you can figure it out.

I have always enjoyed the early steam logging equipment. The primitive prototypes of things to come in moving the logs. Since my layout is set in 1910 I thought I could bring to life one of these beasts:

The early Class A Climax with a vertical boiler.

Railway Recollections makes this nifty urethane kit.

So I got the kit and the “donor mechanism” from this Proto 2000 switcher.

So for the last several weeks in between Holiday Hoop De Doo I have been slowly building the beast.

The thing is big and hence I am going to name it “Bull O’ the Woods.” I had to widen the clearances along the right of way to get the thing to fit on the tracks. Fortunately it fits snuggly in the new Engine House.

Christmas Gift this year is a Tsunami 2 sound decoder loaded with geared locomotive sounds and over the next few weeks I will be installing this in the locomotive.

Thanks for following along. Doc Tom

Fantastic! I really enjoy that “funky” little stuff, that was built in the back shop for a specific job and with what they had.

Keep it “grimey” my friend. Form follows function and there is no money for fancy stuff.

This should be interesting for sure…

Thanks Ric. In researching the early Climax locomotives I found taht they were built to wear out when the logs played out. But that never happened. They proved very durable and lasted well past their original builders projections.

Thanks Sean. I will have some more pictures soon. I appreciate the interest.

Hiya, Doc…don’t you need a little wood structure you could throw into this year’s Challenge? I miss your great background stories ! (and your builds of course).

Thanks John. Those builds and stories were a lot of fun. I am having to work more at the Rural Health Center that employs me and precious little time to get in modeling and story telling. I will have to sit this one out. (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)I am enjoying reading the posts so far this year. Good luck to all entrants.

Doc Tom

Doc that is coming out great. Def has the nice woods feel on the east. The Climax will fit in nicely.

Thanks Shawn. I have been looking at your Climax on your neat videos getting some ideas on colors for my model. This has been a fun build. Doc Tom

Hey Doc,

You said - “They proved very durable and lasted well past their original builders projections.”

From the beginning - early equipment was made, used, stored, canalbalised, re-used and finally melted down for use in new equipment, again. The story of the original “Tom Thumb” reveals that on the 50th anniversary, they had to guesstimate from drawings and reports, because the original Tom Thumb engine was now a water pump or other form of propulsion for something. The “throw away society” didn’t exist at that time.

Really enjoying your progress.

Double Post, sorry! (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)
