Large Scale Central

The "Original" Kittom Lumber Company. Part #2

Tom, I am going to need you to come over and help me when I get to the finer details of my HO module.

Glad to help! My darling daughter lives in Pittsburgh and works at an inner city clinic for the poor. Was there about 2 weeks ago and found that Scenic Express is near by. Dr Tom

Oh yea. My model railroad club did a field trip to Scenic Express. Of course it was on a day when I had other obligations.

I hope to visit SE in person some day. Do you know if they allow general public to enter there warehouse to make purchases? Didn’t know if your RR club was a special group allowed in ???

Doc Tom

As I understand to, you have to call ahead. Its a warehouse, not a storefront. But the guys were telling me they were walking through, grabbing what they wanted out of the bins, and then paying for it in the front of the warehouse. Kinda like a store.

I was able to use one set of accessory electrical wires buried at the beginning of construction.

I cut away the foam around the wires and put in an electrical connector block.

I built my first O scale structure, a shed from Banta Model Works (nice kit) and put a warm LED light in. I cut a groove to the structure in the sculptamold and wired the light.

Here it is lit up.

I will fill in the groove and “dirt in” the structure. The electrical connector hole in the ground will get a styrene cover and for awhile be removable for wiring the other structures to come in “rail camp” the backwoods headquarters and service facility for the Kittom Lumber Co.

Thanks for looking. Doc Tom

GOT ER’ DONE.

That little shack is dirted in and ready for some use by the logging outfit.

It is definitely a temporary structure of wood, tar-paper and sitting in the dirt. Hopefully it will make it til the logs play out.

Thanks Bob. Kind words. Hopefully more wooden structures to follow…this was the first one. Doc Tom

Me thinks that the roof needs some patchs…(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Tar paper does wear out pretty quickly. Doc Tom

Next layer of scenery is going on the mini layout. In keeping with the “backwoods” theme it was time to put in the forest floor. In this first picture on the left is the dirt and downfall and on the left this has been dusted with leaf cover. I used Scenic Express brown leaf material and ground up real leaves from last years Autumnal lawn. I highlighted it all with Scenic Express yellow ground foam.

The layers are fixed with 3M spray adhesive and dilute white glue.

Next to come will be the trees that dropped all these leaves.

Of course someone has to clean it all up and keep the leaves from covering the tracks.

The neighboring Amish brethren in this part of Kentucky are skilled craftsmen. They construct well made barns and sheds. Kittom Lumber Co asked a few of the Amish to frame up the engine house at rail camp. Once a few logs have been cut up into boards the remainder of the walls and roof will go up. Rail Camp is starting to look the part of a backwoods engine and rolling stock facility.

Here is a prototype inspiration shot in the early part of the 20th century.

The model is a Deerfield River Laser kit and is going together nicely.

How wonderful! … Hmmm … I’m seeing a deck like you see from Dennis Rayon work ( bottom right ) … You have the back door there already…

You could have it overhang … a crew lounge …(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

My thoughts exactly. At the back door is an incredible spot to watch all the action at the “Big SPLASH” of the log dump next door. The backwoods entertainment of the day. Doc Tom (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cool.gif)

Thanks Ric. These laser kits are a lot of fun to build. Tom

As the sun is setting, today’s work on the engine House is wrapping up. The boss man wants Smitty to clear the dirt away so they can install the EH doors. Boss man is pretty cheap and never hires enough men for the job.

What I like about a “O” scale model railroading is the chance to put in nail holes, splitting wood, and growing mold and rot on wooden structures.
