Large Scale Central

The Outdoor Layout is ON!

OMG, he did get her to haul the dirt!! How’d ya do that??? Mine won’t go near trains, and hates em! Also my 2 cents here on advice, DO NOT go with any curves smaller than 10ft diameter, you’ll thank me, and the guy that told me that in the late 90’s Al Kramer of San Val on my first purchase of an engine, track, and a rc system the TE. In fact if you can I’d go with 16-20ft unless you are just running LGB, and or Bachmann stuff. I ended up with a Mallet, and the Triplex and dash 9’s which 10ft are about the minimum for those. You won’t be sorry if you go bigger. “The bigger the better” on curves"! Regal

Still looking Hah LOL

I just want to know what kind of bribe it took to get your wife to help move that dirt?
I would have to dig a big hole on the layout and climb in so I could be buried there!
We were at a 7 1/2" layout open house on Sunday riding the rails. They said a fellow modeler has built a ghost town with an operational gallows. I wonder if his wife suggested it!

Have you been following my Deep Cut thread? While working in the un-reinforced trench {OSHA Violation} I carried my cell phone in a plastic bag just-in-case :) I could have been buried for hours before anyone would notice. Then I need to worry if they'd dig me out, or just finish the job :)

I wondered why you were making that so nice.

Do you know why they build such nice prisons in Illinois?

All of our Governors know they may be living there some day.

I’ve been enjoying your project. And if OSHA had found you, it wouldn’t have helped.
But they would have written a nice report!

Notice my fingers were trembling as I typed - that's why so many typos. Marilyn never reads this website but I forgot that Jan or Jean might tell her.

And of course, to seal my fate you quoted my post so I can’t just delete the post and say it never happened.

Nice knowing you all.

It’s inevitable Jon. If this remark doesn’t do you in…I’m sure the post where you were bragging about
it being your idea to find some ass in York…will.

Guys, Kim helps… she’ll paint figures, haul dirt, look for lost tools n’ stuff, and water plants, all I have to do is ASK, nicely, and occasionally bribe her with breakfast out…

Remember, as long as they don’t actively try to sell or file 13 your stuff while you’re at work, it’s all good

Yeah… it blew me away as well. The funny thing here is that for years I have been asking for a portion of the yard to build this and she kept saying NO. However, that all changed 2 years ago when she came into my office and said, “honey, I think I found a place in the yard for your railroad”. I almost fell over. I went out to check and she had already started clearing the under brush out before she showed me. I figured… any place is better than no place so I said YAHOOOO! I immediatly went back into my office to start drawing. She on the othered hand spend the next week completely clearing out the area. YOU GOTS TO LOVE THAT!!! Last week on Saturday, she was helping me with the dirt and then on Sunday I had a photography class and she shoveled and transported dirt herself for 4 hours. YOU REALLY GOTS TO LOVE THAT!!! Yesterday, she was there the whole time helping with lumber, measurements etc… This is gonna be fun!!! Anyway with regards to the turn radius. In order to have anything that will work in the small space I have there will HAVE to be some 16000 turns.

I wonder what’s she’s up to!
We have 2 1/2 acres on the desert so there was room to play.
Of course it also helped that I bought her a quilting machine!

Timmyd, I would proceed with caution, and keep my eyes peeled all around me, as my 62 years has enlightened me to the point I am very wary of what you are saying in the above threads. Have you just taken out more life insurance, or raised the payout upon yer demise??? I kinda think I would always inform everyone you are friends with to be watchful of you and if you should disappear give all yer worldly belonging especially the Trains, to needy kids or something beneficial to mankind. SUMTIN IS UP HERE! Not sure what it is in the immortalized words of the “Buffalo Springfield” band but keep yer eyes open and try to have a buddy with you at all times. Hee Hee LOL Regal

Timmy -

No problem with the tight turns so long as you stick to shorter equipment. Not everyone can have mainline trains in the back yard.

Well…hopefully the 16000 are not “that” tight. I do have a K27 and one of the Bachmann mallet’s I would like to run.

I can’t remember the LGB numbering system. What is the approximate diameter of a 16000 circle ? I was taking your comment to mean something like R2 or R1 which definitely will not fly with 1:20 locos except the little ones.

LGB chart here:

Hope this helps.

I believe the 16000 is R3

I would say the 16000s are even bigger than that. I think Ric uses all 16000s on his layout. I have mostly 16000s on mine and it will handle about anything. I would guess the 16000s are about 10-foot radius.

Everything I can find on Google says 16000’s are R3 and they make an 8 foot diameter circle or 4 Foot Radius. A 10 foot radius circle is HUGE.

Still should be OK for Timmy’s steamers.

It should work fine. I know the large straight I used on the mainline and the other section for the sidings. I never knew they were R3 because I was able to do such wide radii on the mainline but I will keep that in mind after the tracks are powered and other members run their big stuff.

More work done on the project this weekend. With the help of Susan I finished the retaining wall and moved half of the remaining dirt to fill in.
