Anything you do to improve the ease of pic and vid insertion is fine with me. As to the other stuff, since I’m past 70, I won’t remember
how to do it anyway… And I’ve noticed not too many young geeks are members of this crowd here.

I’m an extra old geek around here, and all I can say is “Keep it simple stupid”, but then I don’t do pictures, but do very much appreciate other’s pictures. I guess I’m considered old and selfish…!!!

i dont see where there should be a software-problem with articles.
they are just hidden too well in a dark corner. that’s all.
and the separation of articles and comments to the articles into two different locations of the forum is not needed.
the difference between article and build-log:
a buld log or thread lives from back and forth of opinions, that (might) influence the actual build.
an article is a representation of a finished, complete, done build.
so, if articles were just in normal threads, what would it hinder? the comments following wouldn’t change the article.

For one thing, they would probably just clog up the forums; there’s a LOT of articles out there.
Perhaps they could be treated like the pictures that show up on the home page - randomly select a few to highlight; then, if you’re interested just click on it
I like Bruce’s suggestion to have ‘Article of the Month/Week’ to keep articles in the forefront. It could be a random pick like the photos, but something to keep existing members attuned to them and make new members aware they exist.
Korm, I agree that constructive comments could be an addition. But too many times there are ‘less than constructive’ comments that could be done without. And too many times the build thread experiences thread drift, which is also, in my opinion, non constructive. Also consider that in general, a build thread is documenting something being built, be it structure, rolling stock, etc. An article is more likely to be a ‘how to’ where comments are not necessarily welcome and could become detrimental or a distraction to the subject. I think discussion should be independent of the article. That also gives the article author the option to go back to the article and include any of that commentary if the author sees it as valuable to his article.
All good suggestions. Initially, the next version of LSC will be forum-and-thread specific. We’ve drifted to far to trying to provide a bunch of different things (We used to have auctions and classified ads, too, among other things). I will start with a VERY GOOD package for topics, that allows easy photo/video/etc embedding. Then we will work out from there, adding things that are obvious improvements to the site. The current package promised “Integrated everything” when in reality its a bunch of packages that dont really talk to each other (Why cant I get an image list from the forum post screen, for example?)
Anyway, I’m close to starting the actual process of importing things over to a couple of packages to test on. I hope to have whatever new version of LSC up and running mid-late September.
Bob, take your time. I think I can speak for many that a little longer wait will be well rewarded with a site that is (hopefully) bug free.

Sounds good to me. I don’t know about anybody else, but I’m here for the forums, which are my social distancing, like waaaayyy socially distant, way of staying in contact with the fellowship of our hobby.
EDIT: I just thought I’d say something else…I hope you realize, Bob, that with one magazine after another dropping dead, and one railroad forum after another bought/sold out for advertising, the work you do to keep LSC running becomes more and more important. I don’t know what I’d do without this place.

I do sort of have a deadline of mid-October for this. That’s when I have to renew the current webhost for another year, and I dont want to spend a year’s worth of money and then move the site in November…
Plus deadlines make me work harder.

If you are moving to a ruby/rails app, you might want to look into a specialist hoster that builds on top of aws. I used one of those for a previous project and it was very convenient. Lots of helpful stuff to make it easy to keep versions up to date, etc.

Yea, I use Heroku for a couple other things, and we use Heroku and Digital Ocean at work to build up quick test stacks without provisioning full AWS hardware.
Bob, keep up the great work!!. I love this site and visit often. Haven’t posted anything for some time. I do hope that down the road pics and vids will be easier to do, mainly photos for the MIK challenge. What ever you decide to use or do, I will still be around. Thanks again for a wonderful site!.. Where do all of the readers go now for information? Why the internet, of course! Now is the time for BAGRS to step up and update our club website and increase our online presence via social media. This was one of the main topics of discussion during our last BAGRS Board meeting…

At our ZOOM Board Meeting, we came to the sad realization that club sponsored in-person Open Houses just cannot happen for the foreseeable future. The risk-vs-reward is just too great. Thus, BAGRS must announce that all inperson events are cancelled for the rest of the year. This doesn’t mean you can’t share your RR with other members though… We’d like to do some “virtual” open houses using ZOOM. The Redwood Empire Group in the North Bay recently did this with some success and we’d like to give it a try. Some (most?) logistics still need to be worked out so look for upcoming announcements via email.
It struck me that some (most?) clubs like ours might be amenable to having a place to virtually congregate. Of course, LSC could be fine just the way it is (create a subforum for each club?) but maybe there could be some extra features in your new software to help support clubs have a better virtual interaction, since physical meetups are going to continue to be iffy for sometime yet. And of course, it might be useful to get LSC members to evangelize this site to their clubs. Some things we could do right away might include:

All of the shows our club either puts on or participate in were cancelled in June and last week the decision was made to cancel any in person meetings and open houses.
I think that the idea of “It struck me that some (most?) clubs like ours might be amenable to having a place to virtually congregate…” has already been taken over by Facebook. I know a lot folks don’t care for it, but it’s pretty much the 500 pound gorilla for that sort of thing. Our club’s FB page is less than useful as far as I am concerned due to lack of participation but I doubt another platform is going to fare much better for our group.
